No real trial, cannot edit files in Files app, slow startup
davetron5000

Seems like a nice app, but just for some reference, there is no real free trial - you have to agree to a subscription and then have either 3 or 14 days to remember to cancel if you don't like it. Also, the app is extremely slow to start up. I have a brand new iPad Pro that I literally just purchased yesterday and the app took about 30 seconds to get to the UI. There is a black screen with a yellow ball during this time. Not sure what's going on, but this is a lot of friction. Lastly, it does not seem to integrate with the Files app, so I was not able to edit files I have stored there. I guess maybe that's not the purpose of this app, but just FYI that's the deal.

Data won't delete

I've tried to delete the data from this app in my iCloud, but it will not erase. Just contacted builders. Will change review if applicable.

Superb but not for me
ZipTurtle

I tried to overlook the way Ulysses hides links but I just couldn't get past it. As Ryan Christoffel wrote of Ulysses on MacStories, "I know of some people who simply cannot use the app, no matter how much other parts of it appeal to them, because they hate having their writing abstracted behind text boxes." I'm one of those people. It's a solid app. Two features that really attracted me: (1) you can manually split, merge, and rearrange your entries with very little friction and (2) you don't need to name them. Everything's extraordinarily smooth, BUT— The handling of Markdown is, shall we say, idiosyncratic, flouting standards. For instance: • Three dashes for a horizontal rule? Nope, gotta be four in Ulysses. • Square bracketed-text as a link only when a parenthesized URL follows? Nope, _anything_ in square brackets gets linkified by Ulysses unless you backslash-escape those suckers. • You like using reference-style links? Sorry. • Since Ulysses lets you add footnotes, you might think of using tables or other such extended Markdown, too. Nope. • You like adding HTML markup here and there? Forget it — never mind that it's a core element of Markdown. In the end I kept using BBEdit and 1Writer instead. But if the things I've mentioned won't bother you, GET THE APP AND PAY THE PEOPLE FOR IT. They've earned it.

Don’t need it and don’t recommend it
Quark Gluon Plasma

I was unhappy with the the new pricing model, because the cost seemed out of line with the value I perceived. I looked at what combination of tools for writing and storing information I actually used and enjoyed using. It turned out that Ulysses was in last place in a collection of six or more editors. The hierarchical organization is not a good fit for me, as it just slows everything down. With other Markdown editors having implemented folders and hashtags, the Ulysses document model looks increasingly idiosyncratic. I’m amused by people who pretentiously differentiate between “simple Markdown editors” and Ulysses. I write professionally, mostly in LaTex. Ulysses does not handle LaTex equations well, but several “simple editors” do. Ulysses seems needlessly complicated and expensive for what it does.

Not actually free and you cannot
taonbow567

The app claims to be free. It actually isn’t, in order to able to actually work on it you must pay.. I am sure it is a lovely program. And I do wish the program creators much success. But, I do wish the about was a bit more clear in stating you can only read files and not actually work

Write, Crash, Write, Crash
sarahanelly

In just 15 minutes of *attempted* writing, the app has rained on my parade 5 times...freezing up or crashing down as I’m typing away. This has been a consistent problem since I got the app; it’s unreal. And to top it off, every time I reopen it, a new random sheet is open... Why am I paying money to be taken out of my zone every 5 minutes? *So. Many.* _Ugh‘s._

Best app for long form writing
RoyRogers56

Great update as always, Love that we finally got auto numbered lists and easier “outdent” in nested lists. Thank you! Also love the split view second editor, etc, etc, etc ...

Not worth it
PrincesLover

Better have a look at Scrivener (serious wrighting) and Bear (note taking).

Worst app I ever downloaded
MsCarnahan

Number one when you download the app they ask for a fee of $50 for the app nor do they tell you how much it will be before you can download it but the most important thing is whenever you do delete the app because you never used it in the first place it leaves the app in your storage base 63kbs worth of space !!!!!! So another words you downloaded it and deleted it yet it will show in your storage for the rest of the life of your phone of your iCloud from Apple !!! I will make sure that this company has as many bad reviews on every website I can possible until they figure out how to fix the issue worthless company

Incredible App, Amazing Support
Customer1478

I use this app every day as a writer, and it’s been a real game changer for me in terms of its syncing abilities, versatility, and overall functionality. I will never go back to non-markup for my writing if I can help it! But in addition to that, this app deserves six stars, because I emailed their team with a minor tech issue I was having about getting a keyboard shortcut to work, and they very promptly worked with me to find a solution! (In case anyone is having issues with custom shortcuts in mac OS, make sure you use the full menu path as the location when assigning a shortcut!) Can’t recommend this enough!
