Heartbroken By This Change

screenwriter_jay

I fell in love with Ulysses, and used it like a madman for over a year and a half. When the went to subscription I was horrified, disappointed, and most of all paralyzed. I haven't written a single word in the app since the change over. My "free use" is winding down, but every time I open it to try and write all I can think of is the ticking clock until I have to pay to use, and then the ticking clock until I have to pay the Piper again, if I even can. This destroys people on limited/fixed incomes, and really sets a dangerous gatekeeping precedent for creativity.

More features than any app around

XJY Money

Ulysses has more features than any writing app out there. I was out off by the switch to subscription model, but-really-this is the best in class. No other writing app has this many gesture based features: sliding notes section, embedded footnotes, annotations, etc... Like all apps, it has a few quirks, and the changed where they put the cursor mover, but still, this is a great app.

Indispensable

I love that Ulysses gives me a smooth interface for editing and managing plain text files that I can be confident will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Too sad!

I too loved this app and still think it is one of the best writing apps to express and organize my ideas. I was so impressed I purchased it for my MacBook first and then quickly purchased for iOS. I loved the fact that I could be anywhere and pick up my tale when the muses inspired. However, while the move to a subscription model may seem viable to a developer, it does not to me. The model is not one that I wish to support. I, as a consumer, prefer to buy a particular version and have the option to upgrade when genuinely new versions with improvements are released. Ensuring that the software works with new patches and OS updates is the responsibility of the software vender not the consumer. If they choose not to support a new version of an OS then the consumer can decide whether the reputation of the developer is worth the new investment or not.

Never trust this developer

I purchased this app a couple of month back thinking it's well crafted and will suit my jotting down notes here and then nature. But Tada they introduced brand new spanking Subscription model. RIP Ulysses. I will never ever buy a single software from you guys.

Dependability trumps features for an app like this

...or it should. I do my writing for work here, and the hope for me when they put out a subscription would be higher levels of polish, along with any new features. I love the app most days. It’s got enough options, export support, etc. that I can have it tailored to my workflow without much distraction. But during the many months of use I’ve had some serious hiccups with crashes which now lead me to write a review. It especially happens in split-screen mode, which is a big thing for “serious” apps, and is needed for me as I’m working. I’ve written bug reports for them, but eventually you get tired of writing emails about crashes as you’d prefer to write for work. I’m still using the app as I think it’s the best out there for multi-platform, flexible writing. I just desire greater stability.

Bought the app now I have to subscribe?

FistOf Strength

I bought the app a year ago. They decided to change to subscription. Now I have read-only mode. I bought a WRITING app and I can't write with it because the developers are so GREEDY they retro-actively deactivated a product I already paid for. I can NOT use something I already GAVE THEM MONEY for. They took away something I already gave them money for, because they wanted to make MORE MONEY. On what planet is that fair? In what moral universe is that not shameful greed? Hey folks, if you want to pay the subscription go ahead. Your choice. What kind of company are you supporting? Who says they won't pull a fast one on you in a year, in two years, once all your data is locked in. I'm moving to Scrivener. They're just as good, even better in some respects. Best of all: they're HONEST. Hey developers: why do you deactivate a product that people already paid for to get them to move to a new subscription service? I know it is legal, but is it right? Why don't you let people use the version they paid for? Why is ios app and Mac app READ-ONLY? Do you know what a conscience is, or is money more imporant than your reptuation? Do you really think this is the best way to get people to trust you?

Love it!

So awesome to be able to use the great editor and then export to any format I could possibly want! It’s so versatile. The organization system is great and I’ve had no issues going between my Mac, iPhone, and iPad. I highly recommend using this for any writing you do. I’m even writing README files for programming projects and work documents in it in addition to my blog posts.

Regretted my purchase

limepi

I regret that I sunk time and money into this app. Scrivener is better in every conceivable way. Ulysses promised that people who previously bought the non-subscription version could keep using the old version for free. As of today, the old version of Ulysses no longer launches. Such a terrible experience. Avoid at all costs.

Version 12.3 - Wiped out my Directory Structure

Edit: As explained by tech support I had enabled focus mode. Which is still a problem. I wasted an afternoon because I was not up on all the Apple fingertip movement nonsense. Apple seems to do this to keep all the techies happy that they have mastered some archaic BS feature set. All I want to do is write. This application relies on this nonsense. So I tried Scrivener and I am very happy with it. All actions are icon based. I already have a major part of the structure of a 10 book series created. Another issue I have is deleting in this app. I checked the differences between the Mac and iPad shortcuts and did not find a delete shortcut in the iPad version. What, no deletes? With Scrivener I have a trash can icon. Simple. I researched my options very carefully, and downloaded the trial version of 12.3. I had a 182,000 word draft to organize into the beginnings of a 10 book science fiction series. I read all of the tutorials and started to mark up the chapter titles on my draft. Well, I got a little bored with that after three hours so I started to build a group structure of books and chapters to pull my marked up draft material into. I created a series title, and two book groups successfully. In the process of creating the third book group everything I had created disappeared, along with the tutorial materials that were there when I first opened the application. I have rebooted my iPad which did not help. As you can imagine I will not be trusting my work to this app. I will move to something else.
