Have used the new app now for a while, but I am back to iA Writer, which fits my workflow better and doesn’t cost me $40 a year. Overly pretentious app, very expensive for what it does.

They lie, they hurt people. Positive reviews were written by some kind of marketing agents. Don’t trust them. They will hurt you with no mercy if you pay them money.

After the subscription ends, all my writing in it becomes read-only, and even the "copy" function is forbidden! It denies my access to my own writings. I understand that after the subscription is over, I cannot write with it. But what if I decide do not use it in the future, and copy all my articles to another place? No, Ulyssess robed it. If Ulyssess is the very best Markdown editor, I am willing to subscript and restore all my articles with it. Actually, it's not worth it. Not even a good one. So many better editors out there, like Typora. Just as another man said, a good app ruined by greed. True.

Original Review This was the most expensive app I'd ever purchased. Less than a year into my using it I discovered the one time fee I paid won't even cover me for the rest of my 1st year. I'm expected to pay that again..and then every year thereafter to keep using the app that I thought I'd already purchased. How can you rip off your customers that way Ulysses team? Update May 2018 I'm currently publishing an in-depth review of the new WordPress app for ios. Because it's AMAZING! I came here to grab screenshots of reviews by the many 'ripped off' users, to include in my article, and I realized that most disgruntled reviews were at least responded to...but not mine? Go figure! The main additions to my earlier review are: 1. If you're using WordPress their new app is so comprehensive it renders Ulysses completely useless. 2. Weebly offers an ios app which is really great too! 3. The main reason I switched to WordPress was because I purchased two new iPad Pros. Ulysses doesn't allow me to use those with the $40 I paid. On the new Pro's the app displays in the App Store, but it can't be downloaded. So $40 for a few months use is probably the biggest ripoff I've encountered in a long time!

Against my business model. Too bad. Good thing the free market exists.

I absolutely love this app! I, for one, don’t mind the subscription based model. It allows me to pay just $5 for the latest and greatest. I pay for a lot of subscription model apps, preferring it that way! I don’t have to pay a lot up front, I get the latest and greatest, and if I ever decide I am done, I just cancel! Plus, it’s all synced and gives me the same access on iPad, iPhone, and Mac. The app itself is great, with iCloud support and a very minimal looking interface. I love the typewriting mode! I especially love that all of my writing is all there, no need to open a new file for every different project. Ulysses team, this is a great product, keep up the great work!

Many people are upset over the subscription service, however many of them do not realize that the version they purchased still functions it simply cannot be updated. I didn’t mind the subscription. Ulysses is an amazing product and the ongoing improvements to the app have made the yearly subscription worth it. I’m currently working on my second book. It works flawlessly between my iPad and iPhone. I’ve used both to write, and I’ve never lost any data. I feel secure that my work will not vanish on its own due to some glitch. I recommend Ulysses.

in my opinion, ulysses is the best writing app available at the moment. i paid for the original version and wasn’t thrilled to learn they’d be reintroducing ulysses as a new separate subscription app, but didn’t care much at he time because i had the old version on my iphone 6 plus. i recently bought the iphone x, and naturally the old app isn’t optimized as only the paid version receives updates. i downloaded this to give it a try and wasn’t disappointed. i ended up qualifying for the student rate which is $4.99 a month, which to me is totally reasonable for an optimized, responsive writing app that will CONTINUE to be improved and updated. should the developers ever CEASE their updates for the paid version of ulysses, however, that’s when i’ll have to switch to scrivener. but as long as i see a writing app with continued improvement and added new features i will be more than happy to pay a monthly fee.
