Still so many issues

HotHatchy

Latest update caused tons of new problems. Spelling bee is slow, glitchy, laggy. Scrolling is choppy, images not loading properly, refresh taking forever. Giant Ads either cover the entire screen or don’t load and leave a huge blank space. No dark mode still. Background data usage is crazy high, drains battery. Will this app ever be as good as it should be? It’s a hot mess

Terrible User Experience

Salon Capelli

When scrolling through any screen the app will randomly load ads which cause me to lose my place. I am constantly scrolling up and down trying to find where I was, it’s super annoying. I plan on canceling my subscription if this doesn’t get addressed.

Hate back arrow at bottom + other stuff

Deborah-B

The “back” arrow is shown in the article view, and gets you back to your “home” view. I HATE, I HATE the recent change which moved the back arrow to the bottom of the screen. Please move it back! Or make it a setting that I can change. I hate reading the paper now! I agree with the other reviewers who dislike the recent changes to the UI. The app team desperately needs a usability expert, because it obviously doesn’t have one now. I have resorted to following the Times on Facebook and reading the articles from there. Less content, different ads. But I can understand how it works, so I am not fighting an app to read the paper. While we are here, your update mechanism in the Apple App Store seems partly misconfigured or broken. I am running iOS 13 on my phone. With other apps, when I try to update that app by pressing the “Update” button, I get a popup message that the new version requires a later version of iOS, and that I already have the latest version supported on my platform. The App Store obviously knows what version of iOS I have, and what iOS the app needs. For the Times app, I press “Update” like above. But your install mechanism apparently doesn’t look for compatibility problems, and blindly tries to download the actual latest version (which requires a later iOS), and pops up a window with two buttons. One asks “download latest version for your iOS” and the other is “cancel”. I choose the download option, which repeats the cycle of trying with the latest version, and I get the same popup. This will go on forever. Your app install should act like those other apps and only try to update to the latest version once, get notified from App Store that there is an incompatibility, and exit gracefully.

Please add dark mode

sdmd11

I love NYT and the app except for the lack of a dark mode. Please please please add a dark mode.

Still no dark mode

Dkirsch78

Why can’t one of the world’s biggest news publications figure it out?

Dark mode please

Ponti122

For all that is holy please enable dark mode for this app.

Love NYT; hate the app

MbtNYC

I’m so confused about why a publication with such high standards puts out such a terrible app. It takes *forever* to load - sometimes several minutes. And as I scroll through the front page, at least two or three times it re-loads and shoves me back to the top so I have to then find my place again. And again. And again.

Dark Mode Request

TomC_2

Great app, good consolidation of articles and games, excellent use of the iOS long press features and notifications. Would give it five stars if it just supported dark mode.

Worst of my newspaper apps unless you like Instapaper

AussieYank

The New York Times used to be about news, newsprint, and lots of information. The first apps that were rolled out by the Times seamed to recognize that. Currently, the NY Times app has evolved to me Instatimes, basically a picture based newspaper like USA today. UNLESS you spend your time clicking though to every article. Why not actually include more text next to the pictures, or even skip some of the pictures all together so we can read news? Almost 50% of the space is white space. Previous apps were much better, more like the Washington Post, the Guardian or other news paper apps. It is truly one of the worst unless you like looking at pictures and endlessly clicking though to see the article. Time to re-engineer this one!

Bye bye NYT

I have been an on and off paying subscriber for years. I have to admit that with my light use, I rarely exceeded the limit for free articles when NYT allowed it in the past. That option is now gone. Pity. I am deleting the app, so it is highly unlikely that I will ever subscribe again. The limited free content used to be NYT’s most effective advertisement. Now that they have dropped it, they will probably get even fewer subscribers. Needless to say that the sometimes obscene advertisements the app displayed to its paying subscribers was already bad enough to deserve a 1-star rating.
