I have been learning Italian but I live in a part of the United States where almost no one speaks Italian. HelloTalk has given me the opportunity to practice what I have been learning. You meet a lot of people and some of them become long-term language partners and friends.

Im learning Japanese and this app is great to make friends and learn from natives *Warning* ! THIS IS NOT A DATING APP! If u turn this into a dating app it turns real sus i dont like all the weirdos on there lol but ive made some really good friends

I liked this app at first. It’s a great way to find language exchange partners. However, it insists that you either select male or female as your gender. I didn’t mind this too much, I thought “oh, what does it matter.” I’m non binary but not thinking too hard I just selected female. As time went on I decided I’d rather have my gender listed as male, because it suits me better. I couldn’t change it, so I messaged support. They asked to see proof of my legal gender. Now, mind you, I have not legally transitioned and don’t know when/if I’ll be able to. I couldn’t “prove” my gender, so I explained my situation. They told me to try again once I had legally transitioned. Why they can’t just let people use whichever option they prefer is beyond me. A lot of trans people do not have the option to legally transition. It frustrated me. I deleted the app.

As someone who really likes to learn languages, travel and learn about culture, I find this app to be phenomenal. I have made multiple friendships that even translated to real world friendships. It helps me practice with natives before I am wanting or ready to get a teacher and is usually mutually beneficial. One of my favorite apps at the moment.
