This app is very good. A great learning tool if you are studying another language. I've found many language partners on here that are invaluable to my study of Japanese. The app allows you to see the translation of what you have entered before hitting send. It allows you to correct mistakes so you can see the redlining. I've only used the audio messages a few times, but those work well. My only complaint is this recent update wiped out the field where one can keep notes about your language partner. I wish you'd bring that back. If you did, you would earn 5 stars from me.

I love using this app! As a self taught student of Italian it is difficult to use books and tools such as Rosetta Stone only, they can only get you so far but with HelloTalk you can connect with hundreds of native speakers instantly that are more than happy to help you practice your new language skills, correct your mistakes and pronunciation and teach you the way the language is actually spoken by the people vs by a computer. In exchange you can help them learn your language so they can improve their skills. In the end you make a lot of new friends all over the world! I would highly recommend this app to all language lovers!

Useful Learning Tool

Hello Talk has great features for practicing language. This one-of-kind application is needed, but falls short. The maintainers actually sabotage the application by trying to control user action. * Doesn't integrate with iOS features. * Speak text feature cannot distinguish Japanese from Chinese, mixing both (iOS already solved this) * Censorship. If your message contains any of the "forbidden" words, then the entire message is blocked. What a hindrance to communication -- the very nature of language exchange! * Sometimes copy'n'paste to external apps fails. External copy is important because you will need google translate, as Hello Talk's translating is poor. * Censorship is a big deal here. They go out of their way to moderate and delete user generated content, providing no indication that the content was removed. They read private messages and issue warnings to users who use foul language or are offensive. * No web version. A web version woild be much better than trying to manage multiple apps in multiple languages on iOS. But the problem with that is that it would complicate the censirship that they love. * Hard to make people connections. Because they want to control HelloTalk World, they try to prevent users from inviting other users to Skype, LINE, etc. Facebook and Twitter shares are pretty much banned. * Cannot enlarge profile photos. I want to see the person I am chatting with. Ideally, I woukd have video chat. But HelloTalk has no video, and they are afraid that dating might happen, so they banned enlaged profile photos. * Age range limited to over 18. This is terrible policy. Children (0-11), adolescents (9-17) and young adults (14-18) benefit from learning foreign languages. HelloTalk bans them. This is absurd and harmful.
