Great App for Learning but SERIOUS Issues! Especially with VIP

Gezrii

UPDATE: So upon doing some digging into the app I found that you can change it to exact match settings which helps me a lot with dealing with some of the random harassment and people from languages I am not studying messaging me. There’s also a nice feature to only be messaged by people of the same gender so you are not harassed by the opposite sex, however I feel as if that is only a band-aid solution to a much bigger problem. That being said, I am still getting them which is unfortunate but the latest update also fixed some of the VIP issues I was having. I am keeping my original review here however because some of it is still relevant especially to non-VIP users. I feel like everyone trying to learn a language should try out the non-premium/VIP version. I got this app to help me practice talking with real people and there are many who are kind and happy to help and it’s very fun when that works. Except it doesn’t always work. First of all, I got the VIP which was about $50 annually and has some good perks. However the app itself is constantly making me re-validate my e-mail and type in a code sent to my e-mail just to do basic things. One of those things includes looking at who is viewing my profile which is a VIP perk. Then, when I verify, it says that no one has visited my profile even though I’m getting more viewers and notifications. Essentially, I paid $50 for something I can’t even access. Secondly, too many people are trying to use this as a dating app and it’s very unsettling! I have to block someone almost every time I log on it happens that much (especially because ANYONE looking to learn English or Spanish can find my profile). Honestly, I would’ve been okay with it as I’ve tried other language social media before and it always happens. Sometimes people don’t respect boundaries. At least that’s what I thought until I was on tiktok and saw an ad for HelloTalk! In the ad, it tells the story of an American woman looking to learn Korean and meeting a man through the app, visiting each other, and then eventually getting married. So these creeps sliding into my inbox aren’t just random - HelloTalk is actually advertising itself as a long-distance dating app via tiktok and likely other apps. However, they clearly state when you sign up that this is NOT meant for dating. If it’s not meant for dating then why have such an advertisement? Last but not least is some of the treatment of women and LGBTQ people. Like I said before, I’m already having issues with having to ignore and block many unwanted advancements from men in my inbox. If it weren’t for the fact that I have zero tolerance for that, it would easily be harassment. And while I know and understand other countries have certain views due to their culture on social and political issues such as the treatment of women, LGBTQ rights, and nationalism - this app should not condone or allow harassment, hate speech, and intolerance. I wanted to create a Moment talking about a very lovely and culture-filled LGBTQ neighborhood but had to refrain because I’ve seen some of the responses people get on Queer posts. A part of me is understands, coming from a culture with very outdated views on women and LGBTQ rights. However, when you’re doing a language exchange, learning about another culture and interacting with that culture, you need to accept that there are some culture or other things you’re going to encounter that is different from your own culture and that is something that everyone who signs up needs to acknowledge if they want to use this app to its best. Learning a new language should not come with hatred and harassment. I am sad that I spent quite a bit of money I cannot get back for features that I can’t use. I am frustrated having to filter out all these conversations that lead to bad intentions and disappointed that there are other people on this site like myself who cannot express themselves without receiving hate. The VIP issues can be fixed with some updates, I hope. But what good is even paying for that if I can’t use the app as intended? Either way, I lose.

I'm a Loyalist that sees great potential in this app to be a publicly traded company

colonelandchief

I will always be a loyalist to this app Can we get some new features like these? -Ability to rate others profiles as helpful or not helpful, users have the choice to publicly display their helpfulness score and score entry quantity, posted onto a user profile from inside rather than on some bulky awkward form on the users page -more than 25 new interactions per day for Premium Users ? -Dark Mode option: changes white app colors to black and visaversa but not just an ugly color opposite/negative color effect. -ability to make ✨✨flash cards✨✨for ones self using either text OR audio AND allowing these flash cards w/wo audio to me shared and traded among users -an easy way to send clips of music or tv, particularly via embedded an YouTube hyperlink Player

Nice stuff

AdriannBanana

This app introduced me to 3 current amazing friends of mine from 3 different countries. One of them is a pen pal with whom I’ve actually been able to send and receive gifts!!! Such a beautiful place filled with people who all want to better connect our world. One suggestion—there should be a map function that puts you and your mutuals all together in the globe, like how you see someone’s location on their profile!! Snapchat does it, and with an app like this, it sounds very cool to be able to see your friends in that way (and maybe use it to access their profiles/chats easier)

Trying to be nice

It would be nice if I could change my username ?

I want to give it 5 stars but....

Can they PLEASE make a dark mode? This is the kind of app I want to use at night while relaxing in bed so the harsh white screen will never allow me to really use HelloTalk like I’d like to....please offer dark mode, thank you!

Great App but Many Bugs.

Spoiled Tea

Alright Saw the ad on tiktok, seemed interesting because I’ve been trying to learn some languages other than English.Downloaded the app made an account started chatting with someone about learning a language. It was a great chat In till I tried replying back multiple times I couldn’t even see my chat/what I had typed. This app has potential but the bugs are annoying. Please do fix this. Might just delete it. Also They Haven’t Said anything back to me. Overall 1/10

Hurt my feelings

So I was talking to this guy, Eventually I couldn’t handle the responsibility of teaching someone when I’m not a teacher. And blocked him. I felt so useless after, please make a policy where you can turn down other people, without hurting their feeling bestie.

Decent user base, bad app experience

Zllyllsky

It drains battery really fast on iPhone. Communication channel to the support team is non-existent - there is just some really silly bit that completely doesn’t understand my question. Also I’ve run into quite a lot of fake accounts/bot-like users on the platform. Scams also exist apparently. Just be aware.
