Lots of great data. No trail routes on my hikes?!

Sammy Grumbles

Super promising. Great reviews. My earlier review is below. Turns out I’m an idiot. The 45 degree compensation thing was throwing me off. Changed to 0 and all is better. Went on two hikes so far. The data is great! The maps lacked trails in my hiking spot, which is a little disappointing. Gaia and AllTrails have trail routes marked on their maps. Not sure why WorkOutDoors doesn’t have the trails. Can I add new map sources? Anyway, the data is great. Will continue to experiment on future hikes. —- The dealbreaker for me is that the map won’t show my current forward orientation. Other similar apps show your position on the map with your gps position locked pointing forward, and when you turn, the map turns, not the pointer. This is nice because you always see what’s ahead of you at the top of the map. There are map settings to rotate the map, but as far as I can tell, they don’t do a thing. In fact, a few times I made a change, only to return to the setting screen to find that it had been reset?! Is this a bug? Am I’m doing something wrong? I can’t tell… but I play with a lot of these types of apps and haven’t run into something like this. I’m using an XS Max and a Series 5. I’ll keep an eye on this and continue to play around. I’ll def update if it’s due to my misunderstanding. Thanks for reading.

The greatest running app for Apple Watch by a million miles/km

I can’t recommend this app highly enough for runners with an Apple Watch. First, I can’t believe how mediocre every other Apple Watch fitness app is for running. They lack customization, they’re hard to read, they often don’t even know how to define the metrics they display. Worse yet, every running website, blog, etc keeps recommending the same list of lame apps. This app does everything I was hoping to do and a ton more. It’s completely customizable, from font size, to its 300+ available metrics (some of which are customizable themselves) to multiple screens, screens specific to particular interval workouts, choices for what the buttons do, voice commands, and on and on. I used it today for an interval workout (6x1200 with pace targets) and it worked perfectly. It was accurate, gave good pace range guidance, and allowed me to run the workout without staring at my watch.

Perfection for Apple Watch

I was a long-time Garmin user until I finally caved and bought an Apple Watch in early 2020. Frustrated with other options, a friend pointed me to WorkOutDoors. It does everything - and perfectly. This is the app I’ve been waiting for.

I Have Never Loved An App So Much!

I never write reviews because I’m lazy and most apps are just meh to me. I’m a runner and I left my Garmin forerunner for an Apple Watch and almost immediately regretted it. A couple of internet searches led me to this app and it has been a game changer. I can customize my screen layout with the exact running metrics that I want to see while I run. I can set intervals with audio cues and view my heart rate zone while doing fartleks. This app is what the Apple workout app should of been. My absolute favorite thing about this app is that it is a one-time fee instead of the subscription model apps that everyone seems to be implementing nowadays. 5/5 stars and I will (and did) recommend!

Almost perfect!

This app is amazing and has completely transformed how I hike and how I use my Apple Watch. I’m a long time user of Gaia GPS, but their Watch app has always been pretty bad. This app fills that void in a way I didn’t know was possible. It provides fast and reliable maps and trail navigation on my watch with tons of intuitive detail and actions. The post-workout review on the iPhone app is the best I’ve seen as well. Three things would make this a 5 star app: 1) the ability to have the compass orient the direction of the current position arrow rather than the entire screen (which can be disorienting), 2) being able to see the current track on the iPhone map for when more screen real estate is needed, 3) using the new altimeter on the Apple Watch Series 6. Big thank you to the developer for creating such a fantastic app.

Amazing

First, why was it so hard to find an app to give me audio cues about what HR Zone I was running in? Next, why don’t more people know about this amazing app? Last, not sure how the dev could be more responsive. An absolutely great app and with auto upload to Strava too. I tried all of the main ones and none can do what this one can. And a million different ways to configure it as well. Just fantastic. Get it and get after it!

Still the best workout app

DrScottWatkins

I’ve been using this app for several years now for every workout I do, up to and including half a dozen marathons now. It offers so many features and works really well. It was very solid for me on my Series 4 watch and having recently updated to a Series 6 it is just as good. A few key features I really like: * highly customisable interval workouts * customisable workout audio countdowns that play from the watch or via Bluetooth headphones * highly customisable display * past workouts are stored both on the watch and in the iPhone app, making it much easier to find them than searching Strava * the raw workout data is accessible (and easily transferable) from both the watch and the iPhone app. This contrasts with the Garmin Connect outage which showed how difficult it is to access your own data. Since ditching my Garmin watch due to its flaky connectivity with my iPhone, WorkOutDoors on the Apple Watch has been a far better experience. As with others, I also commend Ian, the developer, on his awesome feedback and assistance if needed. Strongly recommended.

GREAT app for runners!

This blows away the stock app and every 3rd party app I’ve tried (and I’ve tried many). Being able to customize my screens to show what I care about as a runner is priceless. When I’m trying new routes, the vector mapping display is the fastest I’ve ever used and it is invaluable. I love, love this app.

Versatile, Detailed, Useful

This app is amazing! 1. Integrates with Strava 2. Vector maps work great 3. Detailed metrics presented in a super useful format 4. Interval set up is really easy to do (breaks out all stats by interval too - so can see pace/cadence by the type of run you’re doing) I’m excited to explore more of the features tbh (especially the ability to give feedback on target heart rate zones on the fly). I do find customizing the views a bit confusing but I’ve picked it up quickly. Amazing work - thanks for the fantastic app!

This app makes up for most of what is missing

Wanted a Garmin watch’s useful workout metrics, and the Apple watch’s non workout functionality? This app is currently the best one at bridging the gap left my the limited functionality of apple’s workout app.
