Pros and cons vs G5

mbb84335

Been using G6 for more than a year now. Daughter is T1D, diagnosed 4 years ago. We used the G5 as well. Here’s a comparison, mostly for Dexcom’s benefit (I don’t think you can get G5 anymore). Dexcom: overall I strongly prefer the G5, due to software data smoothing on G6. G6 pro vs G5: * finger sticks not required. G6 con vs G5: * G6 data is averaged/filtered in a way that is a major step back from G5. This causes continued frustration, even after using for more than a year. Compression errors and other sensor oddities were much easier to recognize on the G5. G5 compression errors showed as a big step in the data. Over a few weeks, these became easy to recognize, and could be safely ignored. Diabetes BG doesn’t move in giant steps without a dramatic cause. G6 compression errors show up as dangerous looking drops in BG, smoothed to the point that they are difficult to distinguish from actual blood sugar emergencies. This makes false alarms (meaning panicked parents and other caregivers) much more frequent. Detecting BG emergencies (especially while sleeping) is primary reason for the device, and it’s harder to tell on the G6. Remember the boy who cried wolf. False alarms dangerously erode my willingness/capacity to respond to real emergencies. She’s had real emergencies, and I’m thankful for the CGM which alerted us. But false alarms on G6 outnumber real ones by at least 4 to 1. As the sensor neared the end of its life, the G5 readings would become erratic/noisy. After a 3 or 4 sensors, this was easily recognized. “Time for a new sensor!” With the G6, the curves are nearly always beautiful and believable. They just might not have anything to do with my daughter’s actual blood sugar and health. G6 data smoothing requires much more detective work to recognize a faulty/failing G6 sensor. Diabetes requires enough detective work on its own. Show me the non-smoothed data, thank you. The G5 did not attempt to re-write history. Diabetes treatment requires knowing the timing of various events. We often measure time from a particular BG value. “I was 225 uppish, so I gave myself a 2.2 U bolus.” The G6 data smoothing will rewrite this history. On the next reading, the 225 might get rewritten as 217 or 232. So later when we try to check: “did your insulin kick in”, the answer is harder. Hum...don’t see 225 in the history anymore. The time since eating/bolus used to be at our fingertips. With G6 data smoothing, the times are fuzzier. I’ve even seen cases where a 95 downish (alarm triggered) is re-written so her BG never went below 100. Trust me, the BG value when an alarm hits sticks in my head far more clearly than the time. Having a history consistent with the readings is a feature of the G5 I moderately miss. Other two consequences of data smoothing are far more problematic. Thanks for reading. Please make the software change. No more data smoothing, please.

Need Notification to show sugar level

bBaller10292

I love this App for keeping me informed of my daughters levels at all times. In the year that she has been using Dexcom her AIC dropped from 9 to 6.5. The only thing I would like to see is adding the actual level to all notifications whether the phone is locked or not. Thank you

No data

SarahSue12

All day long, data, no data, data, no data... The most critical time before bed to have piece of mind to get sleep and know my child is safe. I’m reviewing all the reviews. What the heck is going on. I’m calling cooperate or someone who gives a crap about helping us caregivers keep our loved ones safe!! Get your crap together Dexcom app people!!

Limited alert option is dangerous!

For anyone who knows the unpredictable nature of diabetes, it’s appalling that this app has two incredibly dangerous flaws both having to do with alert time choices. The “no data” alert starts with a minimum of alarming after 30 minutes of no data. I don’t think the developers realize how much can happen in a half hour!! Our son was already heading into severe hypoglycemia because there was no data and it only alerts you after a half hour. He dropped like a lead balloon in that amount of time. Both that option and the option of a repeat low alert (which is also 30 minutes or more) NEED to be changed so the follower has more options. Perhaps 15 or even 5 minutes?? Such a simple fix for a major consequence

Good start, could be better

It’s obviously great to be able to monitor your SOs blood sugar levels and for that sole purpose, this is great. However, it would be cool if you could make the Apple Watch part of the app better by allowing us to have a Complication that shows real time numbers with the arrows like the user has. This would make it so much easier than having to always open the app to see what the levels are. Otherwise, keep at it and thank you for your work!

Disappointed

The app keeps on saying no data

Worked great for about 5 minutes

ToniBlue1

Keeps telling me notifications are off, even though they aren’t, either in this app or my daughter’s app, can’t turn them in so I don’t know if she’s high or low. Now it won’t let me rotate to see more than her current level, so I can’t see if what her trends have been. Needs an update or overhaul. And my daughters app is super spotty, often showing no data. Monitor is much more consistent.

Ugggg no Data all the time

We are serious Love dexcom, but this app is terrible. We get more NO DATA readings then we get readings. It’s frustrating when I can hear my 12 year olds son alarm go off in his room but my phone shows nothing. Thank god he is home right now but what if he was at school? Dexcom please figure this out. Your product itself is amazing but this app is ridiculous:0(.

Won’t work with new iPhone

Jpgstl

The current version does not work with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. Screen pops up for half a second and goes away. Worked fine on my old iPhone.

Will ISO 13485 PLEASE AUDIT THESE GUYS

CDY DANGER

Been using this app for 4 years. Every update just keep getting worse. Every update, they remove more feature. New features you say? Look again, it’s the same thing with the so call “simplified” or what the so call Continuous Improvement (CI) experts call “stream lined” design. Less information, clumsier and clumsier response. This one for October 2019, after the update, they even take away my Daughter’s user icon portrait photo and replaced it with a cartoon face. It smells too much like Boeing now. Time to audit this company. Did they lose their original design team and just keep deleting functions when it breaks with new iOS release? This app is operating in Safe Mode. The day a good competitor comes along, I will switch. Good Boy Scout engineers, bad CI and burn the world managers.
