Couldn't be happier !

One of my backpacking friends uses Gaia, so, to have a backup system that was completely independent of his, two years ago, I decided to give TopoMaps+ a try. I haven't done a rigorous, point-by-point comparison of the two apps, but I haven't found anything that he can do in Gaia that I can't do in TopoMaps+. The accuracy (on my iPhone 5s and my iPad), the quality and variety of maps, the trip planning features, etc. are all just outstanding on TopoMaps+. The UI is wonderful -- completely intuitive -- and this is coming from a true old school guy who first started hiking as a kid in the 1950's and has hiked and backpacked extensively ever since. I'm sure that some of the other off-line topo map apps are also competent, but the deciding factor for me is the absolutely incredible customer service. As an example, just a couple of days ago, TopoMaps+ did an automatic update and it locked up the app. If this problem had persisted, it would have been a major inconvenience because I am leaving on a backpacking trip tomorrow. I emailed customer service, explained the situation, and within hours, the president of the company was corresponding with me, walked me through the process of getting him the relevent abend / crash dumps, and within a few more hours had identified an unusual problem which happend because of the very large number of maps I have stored on my devices. Within 12 hours, he had TopoMaps+ back up and running on both of my devices, and I didn't even have to re-load any of the maps I had downloaded over the past couple of years. All of my waypoints and routes were preserved, etc. If the customer service at Adobe, Microsoft and Apple could be 1/10th as good, the world would be a better place. I give TopoMaps+ my highest recommendation.

Best topo maps app

Rocks & Trails Lover

This is the best app available for topo maps. The UI is clean and well designed, very intuitive. The map choices are great, the service is outstanding, and it has lots of features. Others I've tried are just not as good for the money you spend.

This app would only except a five star review deserved much lower for poor resolution.

It was also strange that all the reviews were given over a very short period especially on a topo review.

Love it

If you need a topo map program to use in the mountains of Colorado this is your app!

Have to buy hi res

SquidThompson

This app is kind of useless unless you pay for the high resolution maps (which I didn't). The free low resolution maps are so poor they cannot be used. So basically, the app is not free

You have to actually pay on the monthly basis to make it worth.

It's actually very expensive because you have to subscribe to the service to get the detailed map. The seller wins.

Excellent Navigation App

Consulting Utility Forester

I use this app every day at work to navigate to and from the Transmission Power Lines in remote areas all over the Pacific Northwest. Superb functionality with simple data management and more than reasonable pricing come with the added luxury of superior customer service from the developers. Based on my experience of using Topo Maps + over the last year, this app is absolutely 5 stars.

Good Free App, Great For a Few $ More

This is a great app, don’t worry about the critical reviews and here is why. 1) With no in-app purchases (free) you get topo data for the entire USA. Yes it is low resolution, but, it is good enough for general browsing. If you are going to use the app for planning a hike or navigating on the hike you will want the hi-res maps, but, they are pretty cheap, see #2 2) In the in-app purchase are very reasonably priced because of two great ways that the developer handles in-app purchases (a) in-app purchases are not auto renewed, so, you don’t have to worry about forgetting you subscribed and racking up months worth of subscription fees you didn’t need. (b) everything you download you get to keep after your subscription ends. The way I look at it for $9.99, about $2 more than a *single* paper map, I can get all the maps in my area I ever wanted and then never subscribe again. But, let’s say I go to a new area of the county and I need some new maps, again I’d be paying $9.99, about $2 more than a single paper map, for multiple electronic maps. As you can see I’m a fan of the app, and I just purchased it a week ago. I hope that the developer continues to refine and improve this app. I have run into some minor bugs. a) When downloading maps sometimes the app will complete the download, but, not change the tile to the, “tap to delete” with red circle. To get the tile to update I have to tap the tile again. Thankfully on the second tap it seems to know that it already has the file and the “download” only seems to take about 2 seconds. b) I wish the sync would happen in the background automatically. c) I wish there was a way to hide map types I don’t use. d) I wish there was a may to edit and merge tracks. Sometimes I forgot to stop tracking.

Poor interface, worse pricing

It's difficult to know when pinch to zoom works, and the subscription-based model is poor. Subscriptions are also overly expensive when compared to other apps: another topo map (albeit with an equally poor interface) is just four dollars, and includes unlimited high resolution downloads without any subscription. Summary: none I've found have a stellar interface, but there are much cheaper options out there.

Fantastic Topographical Map app!

If you are looking for a great app for hiking, this is it. It allows you to download maps digitally, and also will let your print them! This allows the app to be used even when you are offline. It just uses the iPhone's built in GPS. It has hundreds of thousands of trails built in. If you have an iPad or an Apple Watch, it works great on those as well. I ran into an issue with importing a track, sent it to the developer, and it was fixed in the next release!
