Deleted my other app once I started using this one. It's nice to be able to add way points, add notes, change the color of tracks, etc. (5 star). I very rarely give this rating to anything. This free app deserves it.
Not That Good

A subscription for maps is ridiculous. The app is too slow on an iPhone 4S to be useful. You have to spend weeks of time downloading maps square by square instead of just downloading your whole state or region all at one time. There’s no POIs and roads blend into the contours so badly the map is useless when zoomed out. I’ll stick with a dedicated, waterproof GPS.

I had not been able to use my last years' subscription due to unexpected health issues that knocked the wind out of my sails for the entire year. I wrote the author, owner and founder of Topo Trails to renew my subscription and he automatically renewed me for FREE! and wrote a personal note to encourage me to get out and get back at it! I like being able to save the maps to my phone and use them when out in the back country, preview my hikes and save the routes I take. Also, the multiplicity of map formats available and bicycling route overlays make route finding a breeze! Thanks, Steven, for the hard work and great ap, a timely response to my questions and compassionate encouragement. It's nice to support such an passionate outdoors person and caring entrepreneur! Awesome Backcountry Mapping App

I use Topo Maps+ on my iPhone for my backpacking trips into remote regions. The ablility to add tracks from Google Earth (KML) is awesome for adding routes that don't already exist in the OpenStreetMap trails layer. Also, the battery usage is much lighter than many of the alternatives, which is critical when you are in the backcountry.

I was very impressed with this app! I typically use a Garmin eTrex 20 when I go in the backcountry. I brought this app with me as well as the Garmin on my recent trip and it worked very well! In fact I preferred using this app because it is easier to see and you can see more with the larger screen. I just use the low res maps and that seems to be good enough, sometime I may pay for the hi res maps so I can see more detail. Being able to download maps makes this useful anywhere.
I use it - it's easy- accurate- loss prevention .

I was taught map reading in the Marine Corp in the 60's They thought it was important. I used the mapping skills while In Country (Vietnam) and in the Pine Barrens of NJ. Now Doing 3 x's per week hikes of 4 - 6 miles in the barrens has been tracked with this App. It's outstanding. I will be using it in Maine. Get this U won't be sorry. I was born in 1945.
When you need to do more you need Topo

When you have to move 1300 meters of a trail up 57 meters guessing won't get it . I would have loved to have had this in the Army LRRP it would have saved time and lives .

They go out of their way to make it blurry and pixelated when you zoom in, so then they can get you to pay. Awful way of running an app- thank goodness for paper maps!
