Broken PDF Download in v3.4.7

Bartley

UPDATE #1: 2017/10/18 Still no word from the developers about this issue, and it persists across iOS devices. My best guess is that since Papers is now owned by the ReadCube people, they may be trying to drive legacy users to the ReadCube app and subscription-based model. ReadCube on iOS devices is passable, but on macOS it is complete garbage. You’d have a better user experience just putting all your PDFs in a few nested folders and reading them in Preview. ORIGINAL REVIEW: In this latest version, the ability to download PDFs from a synced Dropbox library is broken. Instead of downloading the paper, the app redirects to the landing page where the paper is available if known (e.g., IEEE, ACM, Science Direct). The developers have acknowledged this is an issue, but I haven’t heard any updates for a week. I’ll update this review when/if they fix this issue, but in the interim, this app is effectively useless for me on iOS devices (the macOS version appears to be unaffected).

current version useless - DONT UPGRADE

DrScience

I cannot download my pdf files from my dropbox to the iOS. Thus the iOS version is functionally USELESS. The current version (3.4.8) and the previous version have the same problem. If you have v 3.4.6 DONT UPGRADE. I am stuck with this p.o.s.

No iCloud support for cross device

KillBillwithNIN

Really? Basic cross device support is missing unless you’re willing to play the silly third party game with Dropbox. Get the iCloud support in place then add in support for third party API.

Great Companion Product to Papers 3 for Mac

Kravlor

I have been a Papers user for more than five years, and believe that despite some flaws the product is very useful for academic research in conjunction with the companion desktop clients. For me, the best feature of the program is it’s PDF library and reader. While there is formal support for adding new entries to the database in-app, I have always had difficulty doing so through my institution’s library proxy service on iOS. Support has switched to “maintenance mode” in last year following the developers acquisition by Labtiva (ReadCube folks). A new Papers/ ReadCube product is in the works, too.

Does what I need

CraigB-RN

Grad student and budding journal article author. Papers 3 and it’s MAC app do what I need. It helps me cite in papers and assists in formatting. (Still have to fine tune). The biggest draw for me that EndNote doesn’t have is being able to take a pdf and match it to it’s data and auto populate the fields. It’s been stable for me and I’ve not hand any problems with it. Not just a useful tool but a necessary one.

Things can be fixed

EnjoyedCaesar

Searching for papers can be difficult (for instance pasting long DOIs into the field breaks up into smaller text bubbles). For some reason does not have access to ios11 passwords. It’s not intuitive that you can’t add a pdf to your library without first importing the paper (why isn’t this simultaneous?). Fix these things and the app would be great.

Gets the job done, but needs some work

dynode

I’ve been a longtime user of Papers on the desktop, and now that I have a shiny iPad Pro - I’m writing this review in the hope that the app is improved. There are some things that could use improvement 1) Inputting article metadata (title, author etc) is flakey. I click around, struggling to get the text box to highlight. I often have to wait until I am at my desktop to import an article because the iPad import is so poor. 2) Missing multitasking support. I would love to read papers while I use safari, or send email. This is more of a nice to have, but would make the app much better for me.

Awesome app

Optimisticman

Very useful app. Waiting for more options

Not good

Andy1234@

Buggy, half-baked piece of “software”. Despite years in the market such basic functions as syncing and author cataloguing still work for just a fraction of PDFs, sometimes simply don’t work although the feature is present. Some PDFs just won’t even open. Stay away if you’re serious about your scientific library

Needs split-screen capability for ipad

Loywfer

I like the app. It’s can be useful. However, the iPad version doesn’t allow split-screen viewing, so if I want to write out my notes in one app while reading an article, I have to do it in the multi-task hover mode. With no palm rejection, the pdf jumps around and links are activated. It’s painful. That said, I think anyone looking to read scientific articles on an iPad should have this app. It excels at keeping your references organized.
