Brought back Journals but falls short of original

ilikey

I’m not going to leave a lengthy review but this is what you need to change for this to be five stars again. 1. Bring back the exact collaboration with moleskine to print books. (Best feature ever and you won a design award for it, why would you remove it?) 2. Go back to the model of paying once for extra features and ditch the subscription. 3. Bring back the ability to have a custom cover for each book. 4. Don’t switch and change the tools around, it takes away from the artists ability to concentrate on the work. 5. Don’t change it once you have perfected it. If you never would’ve updated this app and left it exactly the same as when it came out I would’ve loved using it every day. You had the exact recipe for success. It was like you had the perfect face and then ruined it with way to much plastic surgery.

We need back some features

BenReviewed

The original paper was so much better than it is now. It had a much smaller fee for the extra stuff but now just too much it’s taking away from the artistic feel and adding stuff that distracts the artist from work. We also need custom covers because those are so much better than what we have now. The old collaboration with moleskine was amazing. Taking it away takes away from the app. We don’t want to pay for things like cut, the thing that makes perfect shapes, and fill. I had so many things that with the new update got taken away. So that is my opinion please fix the app!!!

Always demanding more for less.

The actual quality of this app is pretty good, it’s easy to use and has a good number of options for drawing with different tools. But the management of the app has been absolutely awful. I’ve had this app for years, and when it started out, it functioned like a collection of virtual notebooks. Then they decided to scrap all that and changed the setup so your drawings were organized in a loose leaf portfolio. Not only was this layout more confusing, but I also lost all my preexisting drawings in the transition. Now they’ve changed the app again, and you can choose between the two previous layouts. It would be nice if the developers could make up their freaking minds. The worst part, however, is that with every update, more features are moved behind paywalls. Initially, the only in app purchase was for a larger color palette and a color mixer. Now, you have to pay a subscription for custom notebook covers (before you could use any picture on your phone as a cover), the larger color palette, and basic functions like copy and pasting. Do yourself a favor, and find a different app that doesn’t have hostile monetization.

That thank you didn’t last long

53 is not back. There are the notebooks but no custom covers. The first very first 53 had covers as part of the package along with a new and interesting paint palette. I gladly paid for every tool collection and upgrade like the go-back twirl. I got the scissors and arrows. Etc. And then it all went away. Shock. Imagine buying a stack of Moleskene notebooks and opening the box to find random stacks of paper. I simply cannot trust the developers enough to invest. I’d have paid for this app all over again and I have with others but not a subscription. You pay $6 every 6 months for features I already had. This "new" version was turning it back into what I paid for without wonderful things like accordion printed books. Some of these features are coming back but how, paid, legacy subscription. And how do we know it will even last again. The tried and true paint programs have kept a consistency with their customers. You are not Sketchbook, you are not iColorama you are not Procreate. At least with Sketchbook's subscription you get the desktop version as well as the iOS version. And if you can’t use the desktop you just pay the pro version for iOS once and that’s it. I’m glad I have Bamboo Paper. They have lovely little notebooks you can semi-customize, delete pages, send as pdf. Grid paper, colors, and it’s patiently worked for at least 7 years ,

New App, new rules(should have been)

D'Nello

I was looking for digital paper to replace traditional paper. I tried several apps and Paper was one of them. Like so many other, I have yet found the app that truly captures the essence and nuance that I can get from a scrap piece of paper. I use Paper from time to time but there is something missing. I bought the Pencil thinking this was it. It was not. The other day, I saw 4.0 and was excited to see what you offer as “totally rewritten”! I was thinking, “did you guys get it!?!?” You got something. I am not sure it is what we are looking for nor something that we are willing to pay for over and over again. This was the perfect opportunity for you to launch a new app Paper+ or some other name but leave the old version as a legacy app. Is Paper a usable app in this new version? Yes. Do the free portions of this new version make it worth while to use? Yes. Should you have taken away some of the free feature and make it pay? No. Should you have offered new covers as an in-app purchase? Yes. Industry trends are ways to grow profit and/or to stay in business. They should not be to take advantage of your loyal customer base and forcing them to adopt your change in direction. Updates are to improve your product and/or fix bugs. They should not be used to introduce a new business model. ** To be clear and fair, I stated that I used Paper from time to time. This review is more on the principle of paying a subscription for something you already bought or was given for free and unknowingly updating only to find out you would not have if you knew what that meant. Most people have automatic updates turned on so please do not try state it was in the description. *** For the FiftyThree employees that might have mentioned this was a bad idea, just ask them what you should do next. They do not judge, they want to follow through with what you committed to when you started Paper.

Old version: awesome. New version: terrible

I loved paper, used it extensively, and happily paid to be a patron. Then this “upgrade” happened. App crashes every five minutes. Basic features, like arrowheads, are gone. The butterfly view brings the worst features of physical notebooks (they don’t lie flat) to the iPad. The really nice low key grid when you zoom is gone. I can’t use my finger to move shapes around while using pencil to draw anymore. I really hope someone sees this mess and recreates the old paper. If 53 were to offer the old app, I’ll gladly pay a few dollars for it. But this “upgrade” is an unusable mess.

Sad, mad, it’s bad

I’ve been using this app for years and recommended it to everyone. Paid for the color change tool when it first came out. Had all my journals' covers so I could quickly recognize them. No more, all gone. You say I can "restore purchases" but nothing happens when I touch that button. The only live button is "subscribe." Nope, not happening.

Needs better intro tutorials, buggy

Red Grange

It took a long time to figure out how to use Paper- still does not seem to work fully and I cannot locate any “home screen” (not that intuitive and frankly, very confusing). There are really no good tutorials (the one intro video is useless). Would really help if a better step by step video intro series existed. I still do not understand why some pages can only receive typed text and no drawing functionality and other pages are just for drawing- and there is no “home page” button (my app looks very different from the one video that is available). I use other apps that are more intuitive to use that permit BOTH typing and drawing functions on the same page. Paper seems quirky and not as useful as other iOS apps- extremely confusing if you really want to get any real work done. This is kind of a silly “toy app” that is really frustrating to try and figure out.

Carousel journal navigation is the worst

My first eight nicknames were taken, so I chose another.

Please show me a stack or grid of journals and THEIR NAMES. I’m not sad because the app has a carousel. I’m sad because the fact that a carousel shipped makes me think the designers at Paper(one of my favorite apps) have lost direction. Please more UX people on the team. Also the dot grid on zoom is gone.

TERRIBLE MOVE

I have been using this app for years and it has finally reached it's lowest point. -Used to be my favorite- now I loathe the new setup. I can’t even look at my artwork in the right form because now the journals have turned everything to landscape! BAD DECISION FIFTYTHREE
