New App, new rules(should have been) – Paper by WeTransfer Review

I was looking for digital paper to replace traditional paper. I tried several apps and Paper was one of them. Like so many other, I have yet found the app that truly captures the essence and nuance that I can get from a scrap piece of paper. I use Paper from time to time but there is something missing. I bought the Pencil thinking this was it. It was not. The other day, I saw 4.0 and was excited to see what you offer as “totally rewritten”! I was thinking, “did you guys get it!?!?” You got something. I am not sure it is what we are looking for nor something that we are willing to pay for over and over again. This was the perfect opportunity for you to launch a new app Paper+ or some other name but leave the old version as a legacy app. Is Paper a usable app in this new version? Yes. Do the free portions of this new version make it worth while to use? Yes. Should you have taken away some of the free feature and make it pay? No. Should you have offered new covers as an in-app purchase? Yes. Industry trends are ways to grow profit and/or to stay in business. They should not be to take advantage of your loyal customer base and forcing them to adopt your change in direction. Updates are to improve your product and/or fix bugs. They should not be used to introduce a new business model. ** To be clear and fair, I stated that I used Paper from time to time. This review is more on the principle of paying a subscription for something you already bought or was given for free and unknowingly updating only to find out you would not have if you knew what that meant. Most people have automatic updates turned on so please do not try state it was in the description. *** For the FiftyThree employees that might have mentioned this was a bad idea, just ask them what you should do next. They do not judge, they want to follow through with what you committed to when you started Paper.
