No true offline mode

bFn

They say you can read books offline, but that’s mostly false in my experience. I downloaded a few books to my iPad while on WiFi, then went on a trip with no access to the internet. When I tried to read any of the books I had downloaded, it said I had to log in in order to read them, even though they were already downloaded. So I just couldn’t read anything. When I got back online later, I logged in and could read the books. I shut off WiFi and could still access the downloaded book that I had open. But if I tried to open another book, it wouldn’t let me until I got BACK online to log in again! Sorta defeats the purpose. So whatever you do, don’t plan on reading anything if you don’t have internet access, regardless of what they say.

Ever learner’s dream

Ricardo868

I can’t say enough about O’Reilly. The instructors for the live training events are great. All the books and content are top notch. The mobile app is a decent user experience too. If you are like me and love learning new things you won’t be disappointed. However, the price is a bit steep so I hope you get your employer to pay for it ?

It gets the books.

I really don’t like how the scrolling works, but I can access all the books I need.

Some oddities in the design

Motoservo

Not sure why but having playlists for reference books just seems really weird to me. Playlists for books, in general, is weird enough. There are some things I like about the more recent developments with the app that I saw, like notation and highlighting, but I dropped my subscription because it just cost too much for what I got. Most of the tech books are years obsolete, too.

Buggy

Arr_money

Update: the bug has been fixed, and I have been enjoying using this app heavily. I’ve changed my review to 5 stars. This app has potential, but it is very frustrating to use. I searched for one book when I first installed it, and now whenever I open the app it takes me to that search result screen instead of the Home Screen. It often freezes and requires a restart. I’ll use the web interface for now.

Old books in catalog??

DooseBigalow

In general, oreilly is 5 stars. BUT WHY, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD do they keep adding old books?? Flooding their catalog with content that is very very old and not suitable in today’s IT world. The oldest book so far I’ve seen is “The Art of Computer Programming” by Donald E Knuth..from 1997! Why?? This is the oldest book I’ve found so far and there’s a lot more where that comes from..

Everything you need in a single place

hdiazsdv

I find everything I need by simply searching the library, this is very helpful

Cannot download in background

slayerranger

In order to download a audiobook on investing, I am forced to keep the OReilly app screen open. The downloads stop immediately as it is backgrounded.
