I love this app. I love keeping my lifer list. It’s great for birb information….The sound ID is a great feature. I’ll never forget being outside at night, hearing an owl and opening up the app and it identified it! It was an eastern screech owl. It ID’d it so quick the recording caught my Oh! When it showed what bird it was. Also I like that if you long press on the icon you can get to the sound ID quickly. It’s a great app to have if you are a bird lover or are curious of those tweets you hear out in nature!
Of all the ways our phones can cut us off from nature, this app does the opposite. One of my favorite rituals in my day is to go to a window (or outside) sit down with my drink of choice or even a meal, and watch for birds. I stop, I breathe, and I notice. I can do this alone to recharge or enjoy it with a friend or kiddo. Merlin is a life-giving app.
Merlin keeps getting better. Its birdsong identification application is a huge improvement… in fact, it now overshadows the original color, shape, size, and habitat ID program. I can hardly wait until next year!
I love the app but I would like to be able to read the binomial nomenclature of the birds as well.
I take my cell phone and while walking in my neighborhood I listen for birds I can’t see well. It’s been SO NICE TO be able to use Merlin to identify them. I love using it and send grateful thanks to Cornell ornithology Dept. For enriching our lives with this new tool for birding.
I love this app of course sometimes it misses the bird I am hearing. It never identifies the Scaly-breasted Munia finches that are ABUNDANT in my yard. Otherwise fantastic app.
Very easy to use and pretdarn accurate with helpful information
I use this app constantly. The quality of the pictures is amazing. Ii is so easy to customize so you can see the likelihood of spotting various birds in your state by month. Even in those cases where it can’t nail the identification of a bird from one bad picture, it can usually point you in the right direction. It is an excellent app for learn more about birds.
