Well worth $4

The graphics of this port are spectacular when compared to those of the original NES title. Random encounters seem to be very frequent. This is annoying because it takes forever to travel anywhere, and it becomes more about wasting your time than providing a challenge. The encounters are so frequent that Gil becomes meaningless as you rack so much up from encounter spam. With that being said, this port is a great opportunity to play FF1 with clean graphics and a touchscreen interface that works flawlessly. Thank you devs for polishing up a classic!

No save sync between devices (iCloud)

Played for an hour on the iPad. Tried to pick back up on the phone but no luck. Saves are stuck on the device for only as long as you keep the current install.

iPhone X optimization

philliphekmati

This game looks tiny, and honestly, awful on iPhone X. A full screen update would be appreciated, even if it is an in-app purchase.

Fun, but much easier.

Eickbar

Pros: -No major glitches that I’ve noticed -Nice update to the graphics -Maps and item locations are the same as the original. Cons: -Many monsters and items have different names than the original making it confusing. -Going to a single mana pool instead of limited uses per spell lvl greatly reduces the difficulty and the planning that was required in the original. Too easy. -Being able to refill your mana in dungeons. Too easy. -Saving inside of dungeons. Too easy.

Truly a Classic RPG

Sanic the derphog

Every time I have heard of the Final Fantasy series, it has always been regarded as successful, and with the number of games that are in the series to back it up, I never knew how good it actually is. A month ago, I finally decided to try it out, and I just beat it today. I have to say, as an NES game, it’s something. I had 20 hours put in by the end, and I didn’t even do everything. This game has, at the time of its original release in 1987, stunning graphics, and such a vast environment to explore. The story is basic, but the adventure is wonderful. There are tons of spells and weapons to collect. Final Fantasy is known for its turn based combat. The turn based combat is fun and strategic, and the backgrounds in battles are detailed yet simple, but as something of an intermediate RPG player as I am, my prior RPG experience being the Xenoblade Chronicles games and the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series, I was not a huge fan of the random encounter battle system; however, I did become used to it as time went on. Overall, as a beginner to the series, I say this game still holds up to this day, and I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants to try out an RPG, and has never played a Final Fantasy game. I’m looking forward to playing Final Fantasy II, and the main series beyond. I hope my review influences newcomers to give it a try, and look out for my future reviews of the Final Fantasy series. - ToineJak

Great Classic

Hello Geno!

Played this game through several times on iphone, and absolutely love it every time. Still holds up really well despite being so old. Would love to see an update to this game similar to the one applied to Chrono Trigger recently and it’s PC release, but honestly if the game isn’t updated I’ll still be going back to play it yet again and still highly recommend it. Thank you Square!

Tedious beyond belief

Motsjustes

First of all, the random encounter rate in this game is unconscionable. Mobs get monotonous extremely quickly, and there’s no auto-battle function to compensate for it. Fighting a battle every five or six steps gets old *really* quickly, almost to the point I don’t even care to finish the game. Also, the controls are movement clunky and poorly calibrated. Up can be down and left can be right, which exacerbated the random encounter issue exponentially.

Would be perfect

AstralDarkstar

Three objectives is all I ask. 1. Make the onscreen Directional pad smaller. 2. Option to lower or disable the curser and choosing sound effects so I can hear the music. 3. Widescreen support. A distant 4. Controller support. A far distant 5. Apple TV with cloud support

Terrible controls

The controls ruin the entire experience
