Dynamic Tone Remapping Deal Breaker

mechanical engineer7379

It’s pretty hard to find info on this until you experience it for yourself. I have been informed, and I truly believe, that it is a fault of Apple and not Filmic, but here is the deal. Apparently as of iOS 13, and still in 14.0.1 thus far, Apple has forced it’s Dynamic Tone Remapping in video, and does not allow apps to turn it off. What does this mean? It means that even though you can lock white balance, ISO and shutter speed, if you have a dark scene and something brighter enters, the dark background will also adjust to be brighter. Basically, you can’t keep it locked in on a certain exposure no matter what you do. It makes the footage unusable. This effects almost every scene in one way or another. I really feel for Filmic Pro, but the app is ~$24 ($13 initially and another ~$13 in the app to make it actually useful), but it is currently useless unfortunately. I’m glad I didn’t start buying lenses and I really hope Apple fixes this, because besides that, this app with the iPhone 11pro would be really good. Filmic I’m sorry to leave you a poor review, but I hope you are calling and tweeting Apple every day until they fix this, because it is rendering your excellent app useless!

Clean HDMI worked until you updated!

My iPhone 6+ provided clean HDMI until you updated. I was using this old iPhone as a webcam and you ruined it. How did you get the idea it wouldn’t work? Seriously, please roll back so we can use older phones. I need this as an extra camera. The phone is still very usable, except for this... Thanks.

Kit

How can I purchase a cinematography kit for my filmic pro app?

No good if you need better audio options.

The app works fine for video, but nowadays not everything is about video, I tried to connect an external microphone and there was latency between the audio and the video. At some point the app crashed and started recording 2 to 3 seconds videos and I couldn’t stop that. I had to restart my phone that’s first time that I have to to that to stop some app. The worst I spend 20 dollars for the remote control which I thought would be a great idea but it has latency as well you are not able to control parameters in real time. You better try MOTIV Video from shure it is free and works much better.

Great app. Would love if...

I’ve been using FilMic for some time now and I have to say it is the best app for smartphones. There is one option that I would like though. The ability to control bigger gimbals like the Zhiyun Crane 3s. With all step up rings, filters, lenses and any other things put onto the phone, it gets heavy. Too heavy for my Movi Cinema Robot so I bought the Crane 3s. It works fantastically with it except for the fact that I cannot control anything through the gimbal. More and more people will start buying bigger gimbals for the reason above. So it would be great to have some support for the Crane 3s. Once again, I love what you are doing and can’t wait to see what’s in store for your ne t big update. Thank you.

*UPDATE* October 13, 2020 I bought an iPhone SE 2020 and Apple’s weird extended dynamic range software trick is causing exposure changes, even when exposure is locked in Filmic Pro and Lightroom CC. What is worse is that the exposure gets brighter when you point at bright things and darker when you point at dark things. If it was the other way around I could at the very least tolerate the exposure change because it would be helpful in certain situations. There is no way to disable this feature either which boggles my mind. I can’t understand why Apple designs products for creators, and then adds a feature that causes weird visual artifacts (you can see the odd exposure changes in their video examples on the Apple website!) that you cannot disable. How can anyone that works for Apple see this problem and think it is acceptable? My footage is unusable until I can have a truly unchanging exposure. I only hope that Filmic Pro is trying really hard to help Apple see this issue because I can’t find a way to contact Apple directly. Also, support for other gimbals would be super. The gimbals supported by the app only have motors strong enough for phones only. If I attach an ND filter or Moondog Labs lens it gets shaky footage. I plan on buying Ronin SC because of DJI’s great features. I love Filmic Pro, but there is no point in having an awesome app with a phone that has a good camera and processor if the footage is unusable in the end. I have lost the desire to shoot video because I know it will look bad.

Where are the videos?

jtclubs

Filmic Pro has become a users nightmare where Filmic’s video files are lost and videos that were just captured have disappeared into the bloated mess of the latest iOS “Blob” and the “Bermuda Triangle” of the Photos ocean. My advice, or warning, is to be very careful using Filmic Pro after an update to the app or the iOS. Test your workflow before using Filmic Pro and make sure you can find what you just captured. I’ve lost confidence in Filmic Pro and feel compelled to look for a more reliable video capture app. You should do the same.

Audio Issues

Splash TV- HD

I bought this app for Christmas last year and was enjoying it so much I decided to take it with me on my vacation to make into a little documentary, on the last day I lost all my audio. I assumed this was a glitch. Now after re-downloading this app almost a year later I’m still not getting any audio at all. This is a shame because everything else about this app is flawless. Pity

Audio

@bagatelliraphael

What is happening with audio? The mic isn’t working. I tested with native iPhone cam and is everything good bus when I use the FiLMiC app, the audio no works.
