Updating is not better

Curuthanir

Been using the CNET app for years, was my go-to source for tech news everyday. Latest update (“refresh”) is disappointing. Articles take longer to load (and some don’t ever load). App interface is not intuitive. Would rather have the old app back, it was faster, easier, and more dependable to use. Edit: app is now faster to load articles, haven’t run into the issue with articles not loading anymore. I’m using the app more often again.

5 stars to 1

Simpson's lover

Update to previous review: They reached out to me and actually fixed a lot of my issues with the app update! Bonus points to active developers. The design has improved. They brought the bookmarks back! Well, my old bookmarks, thank god, but we can’t save new ones yet. Video functionality has greatly improved. The sharing links and options didn’t work at all for a while, now they sometimes work. The sharing links and options need some serious work still. I actually share a lot of new info that CNet reports on to my clients. It’s a pain when just the title shows up and not a link to the article. Sometimes a picture and nothing else. Sometimes it works. Previous review, was 1 star: I hate the new design and the feature to save articles is gone, as well as all my saved articles. Why would you take that away? I would still give the original app 5 stars, it wasn’t as sleek, but it had flawless functionality.

Brutal update to app - getting better

Rumblebee!!!

Feb. 19 Update. Raised from 1 star to 3 stars. Progress is being made, especially nice to be able to save articles, and videos are easier to find. Still need to work on some issues below, and also crashing issue, especially videos that crash and make you watch ad again to finish video. FYI, can’t log in on iPad, or at least isn’t obvious not to log in. I've been a loyal reader since I got my first iPad about five years ago. First, they have ended many of their best features like Dong NGO, Bridget Carey updates, the 404, and How to videos. Now they refresh the interface. They eliminated saving articles...great idea...nobody wants to save some articles mid-week and look at them during free time on the weekend, right? They also removed the ability to search for videos and articles. After purging great staff the last couple years, one of the last interesting features is Brian Tong's AppleByte. Wish I could find it to watch in the next couple of days, but you removed the ability to search for subject articles or writer/reviewers. The new interface is nice, but how stupid can you be as a news organization to remove ability to search for and save articles? Sorry Chris Matuszak, I like a lot of your quirky stories, but I'm not going to open every article hoping to see one of yours. BTW, half the articles have to be opened at least twice to get them to load. Needless to say, I am disappointed.

Like new look, not loss of features

PM2065

The new look to the app is nice. The more minimal look isn’t quite so busy and has much more white space. I’m frustrated that the app no longer seems to offer the “favorites” feature. Previously the app allowed you to tag an article as a favorite and come back to it later with ease. I can’t seem to find this feature in the new app. Overall like the new look but disappointed that seems less feature rich. UPDATE: The newest update adds the bookmark tab back! Glad to see that. I moved up my rating to 4 stars to account for this. Unfortunately, you can’t add a bookmark, so I couldn’t go to 5 stars. I know the developer has plans to add this feature, so we’ll see what happens. Update again: You can now bookmark articles as in previous iterations of the app. Thank you for returning this feature. Downsides are that it is a little hard to find where you can get back to your bookmarks list. Also, all my previous bookmarks are gone. With all that taken into account, I decided to leave my 4 star rating in place. Improvements are welcome though!

Poor search function

shamoozmom

Update to my review... I will never use an app affiliated with CBS again. Their response to my review was immature and sarcastic. Turned my stomach. When I search for something, all I see is products not related to my search. For example "free malware" comes up with nothing

Updating my review

Blackjetta

And mainly because I got a response from the developer and saw that the improvements for connectivity have been made and I currently seem to consistently able to connect and read articles.

New version issues

Brownmastiff

I will upgrade the review 1 star due to developer corrections from previous versions; but the app still has no easy way to search previous articles like last years app before the redesign used too

Unbelievable

WX7H

This app continues to be on a downward spiral! It use to be a one stop, look and read. It’s now a convoluted exercise in frustration. Another Snapchat exercise where listening to the user is secondary to ads and marketing.

Gets stuck

sebibis

This new update has been awful. I can no longer scroll past the video which means I can only see the first 4 stories. This used to be a great app but has gotten progressively worse. A tech site should have an app that you can read on your tech.

Update: Much Improved

JolietCanada

How could a news outlet that is based completely on technology release such a half-baked update. Constant loading problems. They have always had intermittent issues but since the update this has become a joke. After several years getting my tech news from this app, I erased it today. Update: I re-installed the app after a couple months, and it is worlds better. The loading issues are gone, and the hole thing looks, and runs much smoother. The only thing I would like to see is if I’m in the middle of a article, and have to leave the app for awhile, I wish it would remember where I was at.
