Broken

Vulgar demos

Fails to open iCloud files larger than 1mb. Crashes every time on both wifi and cellular. Using iPad Air 2 on latest iOS.

Hangs and crashes frequently

JHrgrv

Within 15 min of installing, sync to DropBox, begins to hang and crash after inserting code blocks into markdown. Not good.

Simple and Solid

(I changed this review to reflect that the instant crash I suffered when I enabled cellular data sync to Dropbox went away when I deleted and reinstalled the app.) I enjoy Byword quite a lot. It's a no frills Markdown editor that works well, and it's great to have such an app when you don't feel like dealing with something more powerful. Four stars only because I find the sync to be a little wonky, thus far. Otherwise, it's smooth and does the job well.

Promising, but a few major flaws

Squidouche

Byword is a clean, simple markdown/plaintext editor. There are a couple small bugs, like how tapping at the bottom of a scrollable note to bring up the keyboard puts the cursor in the wrong spot. But the biggest issue I have is with the lack of recursive search. Searching only looks in the current folder but not subfolders, making it a time consuming process to find anything if you organize by folders. For such a central function, this is a big limitation.

Needs iOS 9 update.

2016: tried reinstalling again after a year break. I still like the way Byword works--it's clean and simple. But Dropbox sync is still buggy. I'm getting conflicts and endless spinning wheels. Uninstalled, try again later! 2014: Used to be a good app. Needs an update--Dropbox sync, which is essential, isn't reliable.

no true dropbox integration

Rhenish

You cannot open markdown files that already exist in your dropbox folder. You can only create new files. Big waste of money if you want to edit existing files (actually, this totally defeats the purpose and utility of markdown files: ease of moving between editing applications).

My Main Writing Tool

Syncs well between Mac and iOS devices. Can use Cloud or Dropbox. It's a great place from start to publish. Really like the interface.

Best text editor

Rickzilla

I've tried dozens of text editors but Byword is hands down the easiest one to use, especially if you want to use it to work with Scrivener files. Until Scrivener has an iPad app, the only way you can work with a Scrivener project on a mobile device today is to export the project as a set of text files and sync via Dropbox. It's not pretty. But Byword not only handles that screwy workflow, but does it with aplomb, and makes taking Scrivener mobile possible. It's great even if you don't want to work Scrivener too.

Amazing App

Georgedpr

Byword is simply amazing. It is the best text editor for IOS with the perfect combination of features and simplicity. It has changed my whole writing process making it easier so now I write more. Can't recommend enough.

Hidden preview button and no shortcuts

Angelr91

App requires you to swipe up at a weird angel to reveal the 3 dots then you can click that to show where the markdown preview button is. This is very annoying Also the app doesn't have any shortcuts to do the markdown preview which is very annoying since you already have a multi step process to render your HTML. Lastly the app doesn't recognize the '###' header which to me felt like a trivial thing to support as it is a <h3> tag.
