My go to Plain text editor

If you work in plain text and want to keep your work out if proprietary software, then I’ve found nothing better than 1Writer. It integrates perfectly with my Mac Markdown workflow.

Suddenly acting slow

Some Guy from space

This app is the best but in the last day or so it is working very slowly, even if I close other apps and restart the phone.

Best iOS text editor out there - issues with iCloud

Aviris

Had to drop 3 stars because I’m leaving Dropbox and 1Writer will not allow setting my default folder anyplace except the local Documents folder. iCloud is also not an option for a Service. So, my default documents that used to be at Dropbox\Appsync\1Writer cannot be at iCloud\Appsunc\1Writer. So - I add and Other folder to iCloud\Appsync\1Writer ... it works, but will not see any new files added to the folder from any other device until you search for them. Once you search and open a file, it stays visible in the directory, but what a pain! Really sad about this, but supporting the iOS Files system is a very basic feature that, unfortunately does not work.

My Favorite Markdown App on iOS

1. Fast Sync with Dropbox 2. Support Zettelkasten (wiki-style link) 3. Fast and Clever Search Engine 4. Good performance Even my iPhone 6s can cope with the 4000+ notes!

No code block highlighting

What about code block highlighting ?

I love this app!

This app does what it’s supposed to do. It’s very reliable and easy to use. Support is fantastic! Much appreciated!

Great app, but missing code highlighting

drumcat

I love the app. It's fantastic, outside of a few hiccups getting started with iCloud storage. The most important missing feature, however, is the lack of code highlighting within markdown fences. Please implement highlight.js or similar! Still in this situation…

I use this app a lot

But over the past year ive noticed files that are not synced properly dont even show up in the folder as if they are not there. They are not grayed out or disabled, they just don’t appear. I dont think this is right.

Love this app, exactly what I was looking for

I tried other apps like Editorial, which are great but seem to be lacking development and updates recently. Also I wanted something I could integrate with my Nextcloud instance which runs locally (no internet / cloud). I had used Joplin for a long time, which essentially uses WebDAV, as 1Writer does, but I hate the way I can’t use my own file naming and folder structure. This is important because I use VS Code a lot on Mac and PC, so I need to be able to create files there in Markdown. 1Writer seems to fit the bill nicely. I haven’t tried other cloud storage options (I.e. Dropbox), but WebDAV works nicely. It even handles images very well, so I can very easily insert an image, and link it to my /Images directory. I hope this app continues to get more features and attention as it really deserves the 5 stars. I would love to see: 1. Split screen (markdown / preview) as I use an iPad Pro this would look great. I don’t like having to click Preview each time. Markdown Inline preview is enabled, but not sure what this does. 2. Some focus on privacy. I think it has this already, but an emphasis that 1Writer has no access to data would go a long way. 3. Add a WebDAV Sync button at the top. Overall, amazing work!

Normally 5 Stars, but...

Ok. I gave this app 5 stars because it truly is incredible and deserves 5 stars ... normally. You see, 1Writer has been an essential component in my trusted Drafts / nvALT / Dropbox note system for years. BUT, if it weren't for our long-standing relationship, I'd knock it down to 4 stars. Why? At some point in the last year or so, the app stopped being able to handle my notes folder: It crashes (every time, without fail) after just a handful of insignificant edits to any given note. Devs, please fix! 1Writer is one of the best in class, and I don't want to have to migrate to an alternative!
