No prizes

Jamey H

Game play is fun and I understand Virtual Regatta needs to make money but they have gotten really cheap. It costs money to do anything and everything and in earlier versions of the game it was possible to win prizes up to and including Volvo cars. A big disappointment compared to earlier versions.

Enjoyably Instructive

Only had experience with the current card system so can't compare with the prior 'open' versions. I'm taking a purist approach and not spending any real $$ for upgrades, only using the credits either earned or given as a bonus -amateur classification so to speak. Either way the game design is enjoyable and instructive to those interested in the dynamics of sailing - you don't get 10s of thousands of entrants per race if it weren't. As an 'amateur' you can still do pretty well - top 5% consistently I would think.

Realistic Engaging Navigation Simulation

There’s still room for improvement but I really enjoy the game. It makes following the races much more fun because you can really feel the challenges the racers face. I’m still a newbie but my real world sailing & navigation experience is all relevant so I’m doing ok so far. To be competitive you really need to check in several times per day, and over a two or three week race like the Volvo it takes a commitment. I don’t have a problem paying a few $ to get the gear I need to be competitive. Somebody needs to pay for all the software development and the servers, otherwise they’d need ads that would be really unpleasant. It is annoying that buying cards with real $ cannot buy the exact cards I need. The random card selection process is out of context for a simulation - when I go to the store for a piece of gear I get what I came for. Rolling the dice to maybe buy stuff I want but probably buy stuff I don’t want is a weakness of the design.

Eh

Even though I’m a sailor it’s very confusing to start off w, the tutorial needs to be better. I have no idea how to do basic things like change the sails or actually plot a course. Also the graphics aren’t great.

Chapcycle

Every time I turn the game on , I’m doing zero knots. Move the boat one degree and I’m going fast. Couple minutes on same tack and I’m zero again. What’s up? Been playing for a couple years on your games, this is the worst. Zeroing me I’ve lost 30k places.

Good, but a work in progress

sportsscientist

The gameplay overall is fun, even if typical with the cards every “x” hours and the ability to buy more credits. Def needs more work around logging in: Multiple devices should be allowed, it’s wonky right now when going between multiple devices, and I can’t seem to log in on a new device while I am logged in elsewhere—but I just get the “Invalid credentials” error when I know my log in is correct. Also general info around credits: Friends were confused about unlocking power ups and thought they were unlocked for the entire race... not just one leg. And do credits from card buy backs roll over to the next leg? I don’t know. The sailing experience and wind/technical elements are spot on, great job.

If you're retired and used to sail, try this app. It's brain stimulating..

Warning!

Warning: This game may be addicting and lead to loss of productivity and perhaps your ball and chain. I love it. I fantasize that I am truly racing around the world in my VOR 65, but I find myself having to check in regularly to keep up with changing weather and currents. I just wish the real boats positions were streaming live so you could better compare yourself to them. It is actually better than reality because it is millions of dollars less expensive, the food is better, the sleeping accommodations are much better and sail changes are so much easier! Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Game Has Deteriorated

CapitalistSailor

I’ve been playing this game for several years, but it has been heavily modified in the last year. It is not as much fun, and very expensive to play. For example, the Volvo Ocean Race is going on now, which has 11 legs to race around the world. Each leg cost about $14 to get the options needed to be competitive, compared to less than $5 previously. Also the game route does not follow the same route as the real race, and the weather in the game is often very different from the real weather. The interface has been dumbed down and shows less information, frustrating players with some skill in the game and/or real sailing.
