Don't give up

Hedgie12345

I used to to not finish the things I started. I was the type of person who would take the easy road. Over the past couple years as I've matured, I've gotten better with this. The Ensign, however, tested me. When it was released a year or so ago I was turned off by the difficulty and gave up, deleting the app vowing never to return. About a week ago, I saw the ensign again, sitting in my recommended. Seeing it and remembering how much I enjoyed the dark room and the developer commentary, I chose to give it another try. The first attempts were hard for me. I found myself wanting to give in and give up after every death by either the defectors or lack of attention to my food and water. After making it so far in this game as to get to the spaceship and seeing hope of beating it, I die again. Curses *SPOILERS AHEAD* This world I came to draw in my mind, one filled with hopeless and beaten humans struggling to survive. Men screaming wildly as they charge to their fate of the Ensign slashing them down for a few scraps of food. The flashbacks gave me more insight to the war and destruction. The beautifully drawn mental pictures of a struggle of morality as the Ensign went along his path. The hesitance to continue after dying for the firsts time after making it to the spaceship was real, but I continued, making sure to grab every alloy I could find, in a hope to make it past the asteroids. Eventually I saw the final screen, but I was bugged by my incomplete run through. It left me wanting to accomplish the impossible, refuse the food and so on. It was hard to go on but I wanted to prove myself I could do it. I couldn't resist the secrets button. After listening to the 2nd sound file and hearing the creator say "don't sell yourself short, you've made it this far." I knew I had to beat this fully before I perished all the developer comments, it wouldn't feel right otherwise. Finally I finished the game, and god how good it felt. I was proud of what I had accomplished and suddenly found myself thanking the developer for giving me this experience. Though it was a hard journey, getting through it and experiencing this beautifully crafted world, I was a better person for it. I urge those of you reading this reviews for a reason to keep playing to not give up. Keep playing.

Wonderful

Duderock07

One of the best experiences I've had on a mobile game. Edit: After the update, oh man! This game was a challenge at first but now it's something else. Only played for a bit haven't run into thieves yet but not looking forward to.

Amazing game.

Slain by asteroids.

A hug is no consultation.

Too hard!

Jctusa2011

Similar to "A Dark Room", (which I loved) but this game is way too hard. I've got 3 kids and a job- no way I could spend the hours needed to win this game. Devs please consider an update that offers an easier way to get through.

Not worth it

PurlTwoTogether

I played a lot of rounds and spent a lot of time on this, eventually exploring the entire map and fighting a super powered enemy. Nothing happened. While it definitely diverted a lot of time and was interesting for the story elements, having no resolution and literally being told by the game not to play again because there's no ending is disappointing. I know the game is supposed to be frustrating, but I've sat on it and I'm just disappointed. I regret playing this.

The more pickup version of Dark Room

PresEmeritus ;)

This is a more replayable version of A Dark Room, which was also amazing. I love the world that you can encoder by playing both (A Dark Room first of course). Seriously, these two games (as one package) are one of my favorites ever!

Difficult but beautiful

NovaSTL

Though this game is listed as Prequel, definitely play A Dark Room first, preferably at both levels, Easy and (without huts) Hard. After that, this game will make more sense. It took me several tries, but while trying, I found the "flow" of this game to be exceptional. Hours would fly by, and each time I played the game (I have gone through multiple times now), I would have a different experience, and hear the story in a different way. Well done!

More difficult than fun

A dark room was fun this game isn't . It's great until you run into the guy with 199 max hp while you still have 39 max hp. Basically you progress until the game decides to kill you. Waste of time and it's not even fun.

Progress lost multiple times

I like the game, but I’ve had many instances where my progress is lost, including gear I’ve acquired, and map location. Seems to happen no matter where I stop playing.

I really wanted to like this, but sadistically hard

mrflip

No chance to explore the world. After a couple plays it puts you in a mode where an inescapably early encounter is with a 400 hp defector (you might have 40ish). If the world geometry isn’t just right, can easily die for dumb reasons. Could have been so much fun, but isn’t. A Dark Room is amazing, too bad the designer didn’t balance this game.
