Solid choice in a crowded space

Here’s what I can say: if you pick 10% over the competition, you won’t be disappointed. 10% is a great starting place for a meditation practice, and with its depth of instructors and courses, it’s an even better resource for intermediate and experienced practitioners. Here’s what I can’t say: that’s its the perfect app for you, or that its the best value. Sorry, but that’s going to take trial and error, and research on your part. Again, this is a crowded space, and there is solid competition, nearly all of which are cheaper. Here’s what 10% does well: * Lots a great instructors * Strong line-up of courses aimed at new practitioners * Ability to à la carte your practice if just fitting in a session for a specific duration fits your sitting style better What 10% needs to work on: * While it is possible to “like” or favorite sessions, you cannot group them into custom courses or even group them by theme. * Sessions start with a video, which can be great for new meditators who want to learn more about why they’re doing what they’re doing. But Dan’s sense of humor might not be how you want to start a session, and you can’t toggle video intros on or off. (“Setting one’s intention is like setting the compass for one’s heart,” Jack Kornfield wrote. And Dan’s sets your intention without asking you first with his lighthearted banter each time. Reading other reviews, you’ll see lots of new meditators who really like the videos and the humor, but not so many comments from more experienced users. My guess: it gets old after awhile, and folks just want to start the session.) * The developers obviously spent a lot of time on design. The app just plain looks good. But looks camouflage some problems. The play/pause interface, for example, is incredibly innovative but actually makes playing and pausing less intuitive. And it’s confusing that meditations have two different names. From one view, you see the title of the video, and from another you see the title of the meditation. The result is, the user does a meditation, clicks the like button, then goes to favorites, and it’s not there. (It’s there, but under a different name.) * There’s really no excuse for a iPad app that is just a 2x view of the iPhone app. At the very basic level, it’s annoying not to allow a rotated view. But it’s also a missed opportunity. From a UX standpoint, the iPhone app should be the down and dirty, no frills, get the job done version — get into your meditation and get out. And then the iPad version would be the place to collect all of those introductory videos into one place, where a user could spend 30-45 minutes watching them all consecutively. * The 10% company is missing another great opportunity by not integrating the app, website, and podcast. The podcast is a great place for a deep dive into specific subjects, but the podcast notes and references are lacking — good for some episodes, horrible for others. There are no links between podcast episodes and app meditations that touch on the same subjects. And the website simply points to the 10% app and the podcast app, without deeper links to specific subjects. (Where they are really missing out is not having a blog that could tie all three together. Instead of going back and changing all three, adding a blog or a weekly news section could fix all of that with minimal additional work.) At the end of the day, here’s what I’ll say: I’m 3 months into 10% (so I’m only 2.5% happier right now) and I fully intend to resubscribe, despite finding myself nitpicking the app over this or that.

Extremely limited free meditations

I am looking for an app to continue meditating. I’ve been using YouTube so I thought this would be better. I would be more stressed knowing I have to pay monthly to meditate when I can do it for free. There are also other apps I can use that offer more free videos. I don’t need tutorials. Disappointing...

Ugh

I can do meditation through YouTube if I have to. Imagine my disappointment when I saw a number to my permitted meditations and an offer to sign up for a subscription. Instantly uninstalled.

Not impressed

It says free but for literally everything you have to pay a monthly fee?

This app truly had a hugely positive impact on my life

My family is visiting right now. This morning I meditated on gratitude. Appreciation seems more than it was before. This app/meditation made me appreciate water more. A weird review, right? This is simple mindfulness for me. These are my truths. I never meditated before this app. I immediately purchased it once I felt that breakthrough. It was day 2. Please use this app. You will have a more positive effect on the world. I am confident in that statement. I struggle with addiction. This app helps mitigate my cravings. This app is more helpful to me than my current therapist. It is truly great. And for this, I am grateful.

Warning! Double check subscription level!

App offers different amounts for subscription levels. I chose the monthly plan but it charged me for the full year!!

Best app for meditation. I’ve learned a lot of techniques and I really love the videos.

Sometimes hangs mid-meditation

Wants genre games

Great intro to meditation!

Disappointed that there is not a money price.

I am a retired Occupational therapist and I am pleased with your perspectives teaching some neurology with physiology psychology. Here comes the problem. I suffered a physical trauma with chronic pain and PTSD on the job. A dog maul. There are plenty of people like me that can barely make it month to month and have hard time paying for enough health services. Please think about a restructuring of your payment structure. I would purchase but not a an anual price.

My Go-To app

Love this app. It has been instrumental to help me increase mindfulness. I really enjoy this discussions and reflections from meditation guides. I just wish I could download some of my favorite meditation guides to listen to when cell or WiFi is not available.
