Synology Moments allows you to view photos/videos stored in Synology Drive with an iOS device on the go. All your photos will be displayed in time order and get smartly sorted into topical albums, making it fun and easy refreshing your unique moments in life.
Always been amazed and impressed with Synology. We use the bigger ones in our corporate offices holding over 100TBs of data. This review is based on my personal DS412+ I have at home. My entire family has been using photos but always wished we had something that would read the exif data and organize it. Well now it’s hear and I am happy to say so far it works really well, especially for a beta. They even added a way to mass delete all the photos and videos on your phone after they have been backed up to free up some space! Yes finally!!! The only things I hope they do fairly soon although certainly not a priority is to make the screen adjust correctly on the iPhone X. Thanks Synology!
Worked great for several hours and backed up about 5,000 photos. Then received phone call and after that it will not back up rest of 24,000 photos left. When it was working, it was fast and I really like the lay out.
PhotoStation has been long in the tooth for a while now. Moments is a clear path forward for those who refuse to pay Apple or give up everything to Google. Compared to Apple it supports more platforms giving you future mobility. Unlike Google the files are in your house not some magically “free” cloud. You can literally pull the plug and destroy the drives if you feel the urge - but therein lies the rub. You need to treat your Disk Station like the holy grail it is. I may go a little overboard but in addition to parity RAID you’ll want an additional physical backup and an encrypted cloud one too. Throw your DS, router, and modem on battery backups and you’ll be good to go!
Had this working pretty well for a week or so, but now the program won’t open at all. I get the splash screen which hangs for a while and then crashes. Umm... going back to DS Photo until there is an update.
Formerly I had issue with this app because my phone has to have the app open for it to backup. Sighed and dealt with it. But now it crashes within 2 seconds of opening.
For the most part I like my synology DNS, and the Photos App is okay, but not particularly easy to use compared to say Apple Photos, Google Photos, etc. (Sharing usually results in error messages, smart albums have never worked for.me, etc.) Moments promises to bring Photos into the modern age, but falls flat in my opinion. - Setup is absolutely confusing. I still don't understand what Drive, why I need it, or how to use it. - Why does Moments even exist? Seriously, why not Photos 2.0? - Why isn't there some way to easily migrate from Photos to Moments? I don't want two photo libraries, but neither do I want to lose my folder / album structure...
Very nice UI, but a critical feature are missing. Backing up in background. Currently unless I open the app, back up doesn’t happen. Is this a limitation by Apple or Synology? It would nice to have a way to see Live Photo as they are in the stock photos app.
