Update to fix slowdown?

I am playing on an iPhone 5S running iOS 8.4.1. This phone can handle the Infinity Blade games, so one would think it could handle R-Type. Apparently not? I have hard reset my phone, closed all background apps, and even turned on the "reduce motion" feature, but there is still intermittent slowdown that makes the game unplayable.
iOS 9 made it laggy

Anyone else having lag issues with the new OS? I still love the game, but it's almost unplayable with the lag.

I think this is the first game I've downloaded from the App Store that feels like a real video game to me. It's really hard but really fun. My daughter loves it too. Also not sure if I'll ever beat it!

OMG! If you played this 25 years ago you're going to want to download this. It's pretty much exactly the same game.

R-Type is back in pixel perfect perfection. Plays well on the iPad Air 2 as it brings back memories of the arcade! Just one request, please update it with Bluetooth controller support. I would give five stars if it had that.

If you grew up playing arcades in the mid/late 80's you'd want this game. Perfect game to kill time. Wear headphones if you want to time travel back then.

I loved this as an arcade game and it's just as good on my iPad! And it's just like the arcade game, but I don't have to pay a quarter for three lives.
