Works fine with 30-pin iXY, iPad Mini, and Lightning adapter

TLMuse

I recently purchased an original (30-pin) iXY for use with an old (30-pin) iPod Touch and an iPad Mini (Retina) that instead uses a Lightning cable. Rode's web site indicates the 30-pin iXY works fine with Apple's 30-pin Lightning adapter cable, and I'm happy to report this is accurate (although the adapter's connection can be a little finicky). I initially tried the iXY with apps other than RODE Rec LE (Capture Duo, GarageBand). It worked, but the signal was at a very low level, with no gain control available on those apps. Then I downloaded RODE Rec LE. I had the same experience (low level), but RODE Rec LE let me adjust the mic gain. For recording conversation-level audio from a few feet away, the gain has to be at or near its highest setting. Evidently, the iXY ships with its gain at a very low setting (probably not a great idea). In any case, once the gain was set with RODE Rec LE, it is evidently saved in the iXY, as its level is now workable in other apps. I've since used it successfully with Capture Duo, GarageBand, Arturia, Tascam Portastudio, and Focusrite Tape. The RODE Rec LE interface is a bit clunky; it lacks basic transport controls like rewind to start or forward to end of track, and getting a file out (via iTunes) requires an awkward two-step process, where an audio file has to be created in the app (from your already-recorded and saved audio file!) before it becomes available via file sharing. But I haven't experienced any bugs or crashing (albeit with just a half dozen or so short test sessions). I'll probably upgrade to the full version just to have more capabilities within an app that lets me adjust the mic gain, since the mic gain is not adjustable in other apps. It seems many of the negative reviews are from Lav mic owners. I don't have the RODE Lav mic so I can't speak to whether there are issues unique to the Lav mic.

Works perfectly on iPhone 6

I am planning to use this as a supplement recording device for interviews. I have tested in various environment and it works perfectly as it should be. The application is not as intuitive as it should be. There's rooms for improvement.

I would fire the app developer

CapeC0d

Not reliable, buggy piece of software. Forget about using it for any business. Unless you want to make you client upset while explaining to him why didn’t you record the sound.

I don't see any problem with the app

Got my smartlav+ today and downloaded this app and it worked with no problems (I feel like the other bad reviews for this is outdated

Rode, Anybody there?

MaxOut.Club

I bought your mic and want to buy your app, but what's going on? iOS 9 has been around for a while now and have updated the app or fixed the issues your customers are having… Hello hello hello… fix it or abandon and take it out here. Thx

Extremely poor, garbage!

Extremely poor, garbage! Why did I pay $200+ for this mic??!

Too many "upgrade" interruptions to use

Sao Bento Grande

I'm a media professional, and I was looking for a professional audio recording app. I assumed a company like Røde would be a safe bet, but after seeing the bad reviews of the full version I decided to try this out first. The constant push to upgrade to the paid version makes this pretty much useless. I don't have any alternatives to recommend, but don't waste your time on this.

Horrible demo

Tech Heroes

Was demoing this app to record from a lav mic for our YouTube channel using an iPhone 6s+. Constant app crashes only recognizes the mic half the time and when it finally works it crashes after every ftp upload. Can't say I'd bother spending money on the full version when the free version barely functions.

Sad

Got an iXY that is a fantastic little mic. Sadly it works with every other app but this one☹️

Fire was better

Nyetah

This app was once known as Fire before Rode acquired the app. Now the app seems to be fairly weak at best. But I can't get the LE version to even work. The buttons are grayed out and the only button that stands out is a request to upgrade to the paid version. The reviews at the paid version repeat the same issues for users - people can't get the app to work, buttons grayed out, etc. Fire was a breeze to use and it's curious why the app now is so buggy and difficult. Also a shame that a solid hardware company like Rode can't make this app sing.
