Rode mics are great, this app is a piece of S#%t

Shame on Rode for continuing to neglect fixing this a buggy app. It constantly crashes on start up or in the middle of recording, and they have the nerve to ask to you upgrade to the Pro version every time you launch the app. I thought by now the app would at least be reliable enough to use without fear of losing a recording, but sadly that is not the case. I’ll continue to use the Zoom Handy Recorder, which has more features, is stable and is also FREE. I don’t understand why Rode doesn't give a promo code to upgrade to the Pro version to anyone who buys and registers one of their microphones that is compatible with this app. Seems like a easy way to add value to a Rode microphone purchase — once they fix the app, that is.

Okay with flaws

I have 5 Smartlav microphones from Rode (and several other Rode products - great mics!). I am a teacher, and my students use the lavs with their phones. The new update REQUIRES iOS 8. Half of my students haven't updated yet, and some can't update because they have older phones. Good: The "web browser access" is a great way to share files in a classroom environment. Students don't have to have access to email or sync their phones with the lab computers. I haven't used any of the other sharing methods. You can change the gain/recording level while recording, which is nice. The ability to control the gain/input of the mic is huge, but more and more audio recoring apps are adding this feature. Bad: Still crashes frequently when "creating an audio file" for file sharing. Also, this can be tedious when you have to create several files to share. There is not batch export. So, if you have 30 files to export and each audio file goes one at a time and it crashes every other time it can be kind of obnoxious. Interface is still pretty dated. This is just laziness and I think shows the commitment to the development of the app. The recording levels are represented by a green - yellow - red bar. I wish it had numbers too (-48, -32, -6, 0 etc.)

RODE is not taking their software seriously.

The professionals who spend hundreds of dollars on your microphones would really appreciate if you followed through with reliable software. To everybody who complains about the audio processing in iOS, I have a solution for you. Use iMovie. It records uncompressed very high quality .CAF files, with no recording limit. Very reliable, runs all night. The only thing is you have to put an arbitrary slice of video on the timeline in order to record, but as long as you start recording from the beginning it will continue indefinitely. When you're finished, send the project to iTunes. All you have to do is change the file extension to .zip on the Mac and presto, the iPod touch can replace your Zoom. It sounds complicated, but it's actually much simpler and more reliable than a lot of audio apps I've tried – including GarageBand which imposes a recording time limit for reasons I cannot understand. So, until RØDE decides they want your business, I suggest you try iMovie for iOS.

missa-pro on the app

first off. NO DELETE button, how can you have an app with no delete button, in itunes delete ? saw that , tried it , and still the file lingers taking precious space on my iphone, did not like that, did a recording using just the headset mic, sounded good, but then we go back to the main problem, no delete, i know the excuses , "well its to protect the file from accidental erasure" no problem , you add a protect file button opposite the much needed DELETE button, I was really considering the upgrade version, but if its more of this, from a company that prides itself in making the top quality mics, this feels more like an after thought of an app, and we know your speacialty are the Mics, but i think you can hire a top notch team of quality app programers. and even then i think this might draw up some excuses relating to cost... but still if the product is right, then the expense might be justified.

Not working

I also bought the Rode lav+ mic to use with this app. Doesn't recognize that the mic is plugged in half the time. When it does recognize it keeps activating Siri so I can't record. I sent back the mic and just received a replacement. SAME DEAL NOT WORKING. The only thing I can say is it may not be the mic it is the App. PLEASE FIX GUYS. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE AS WELL. I emailed when I got the first mic a week ago and NO reply. Disappointed in Rode.

Not worth the effort

I will preface this by saying I am a professional sound man for indie films and documentaries. A friend loaned me a Rode Smartlav mic to play with as he hadn't managed to get it to work and thought I might could do better. Well, I was hopeful. I downloaded the Rode Rec Le app because it's the only one available from them and it's free (unlike the upgrade that supposedly has features that should be included in this one like low cut filter and Eq). This app has been tailored for their new stereo mic that clips onto the phone and DOES NOT WORK FOR CRAP with the lav. Just like the previous reviewer said, half the time it doesn't know the lav is plugged in, which turns on the phone's mic and activates iOS processing, which then screws settings up when it finally does (seemingly randomly) acknowledge the lav is there. The levels have to be cranked to get any noticeable recording - I actually had to yell into the mic to get a waveform to appear. In short, this app is awful, useless, and should be an embarrassment to Rode. Don't waste your time. If you've gotten a Rode lav and are about to download this app for it, just stop now, return it and buy a cheap recorder and a decent wired lavaliere to plug into it. Zoom, Tascam, Countryman, Shure... Much better investments.

Works not sure what all the fuss is about?

Hello fellow music and recording fanatics! I have the Røde stereo mic. I am still debating whether I actually need the paid version, but I was able to record a test and play it back with absolute ease at 96KHz (and I still think it is incredible to have such power on my phone now). I also was able to set it up quite easily on Garageband which recognizes it automatically - if you click on what looks like an icon of a quarter inch plug in the top left corner of the recorder section (i.e. After adding it as an instrument/track) you merely switch into stereo mode, and presto stereo. I doubt it's doing 96Khz via GarageBand and no options are given for changing the bitrate. What other free apps would be recommended in place of the paid version of this? This LE edition works like a charm, but reviewers said there were better free apps without specifying. Thanks in advance! Hope this review helped

Great Mics horrible apps

I just got the Rode iXY L mic, the sound is so amazing & no latency unlike the built in Apple mic. But this app is complete & total garbage. When I try to save my settings between stereo & mono it simply keeps it in stereo no matter what I do. The fact that one needs to use their horrible app to change basic settings is bad. Total injustice to the mic quality.
