Not all that I hoped

'Guido' -JR

I’m a travel writer and often use my phone as a backup camera. After hearing rave reviews about the quality of Moment’s lenses, I was still on the fence because of the comparability issues of the first gen lenses with the iPhone 7+. Additionally, I need extra battery life and I often find myself without easy access to power. Since I currently used a battery case, I didn’t want to sacrifice battery life for lenses, I didn’t want to use an external battery because they are awkward if I need to shoot, and I didn’t want to have to switch back and forth between cases. When Moment came out with their battery case and new line of lenses I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to switch. I bought the battery case and three lenses from Moment’s Kickstarter campaign. After several setbacks and date changes (hey, things happen), I finally got my order. Initially, everything seemed to work pretty well. But the more I used it, the more issues I started running into. As a travel writer, I use photographs to help share stories of the place I visit. As I started using my Moment case, lenses and app more and more, I started noticing more and more issues. Firstly, the Moment app doesn’t seem to do as good a job as the native iPhone camera app except in a few features, namely raw mode, and the ability to set focus and exposure independently. When using the Moment app, I’ve experienced more noise, a softer focus, often trouble focusing, lower dynamic range which leads to images with more contrast, and what I can only describe as a 80’s glamour style light washing over the photo (and yes, I routinely clean my phone and Moment lenses). Secondly, it seems to be cumbersome to set up the app for the photos I want to take. A lot of switches between lenses and app settings and swiping and sliding, makes it more cumbersome to use than my DSLR. I need my gear to help me tell the story, not stand in my way. I’ve had further issues with my case. I keep iOS, the app and the case fully updated all the time, but as I have used the case, there have started to be more and more connectivity issue. Issues with the app knowing the case is connected at all, issues with the case turning itself off and not charging the phone (when the case says it is connected), random notifications that pop up to tell me the case has been connected when it’s been connected the entire time, widget issues either not loading at all or not allowing me to day anything other than launching the camera, and issues with charging the phone when plugged in while in the case (as I’m writing this, my phone is at 17% while my case is at 89% and my phone charged overnight). I have tried all of the trouble shooting steps available on the Moment website multiple times and have been able to fix the problem, but only temporarily. I would love for these products to work as intended and I hope there is a long term solution in the works.

Now crashing when writing TIFFs

DavidNoHappy

This has been my go to camera app for a couple of years now (love the lenses) but now the app crashes when I try to shoot TIFFs. The picture takes, the app thinks for a bit, and then crashes. Not a problem in JPEG. Have moved on to another app until this is fixed.

App still doesn’t work with iPhone 8+

FreshCoast Photog

The App still does not recognize the battery case and therefore the shutter and battery charge widget does not work.

Glitches

Javiando55

Been a LONG time Moment Lens fan and was very excited when I found out that I could use the same cases for my 7+ for my new 8+. Battery case wasn’t recognized by the phone and so I reached out and was told that an update would address the issue. It did for a short time. Now the case disconnects, shutter button won’t work. I end up having to take the phone out of the case to reset the case and start over. Kinda bumbed, loved using the battery case with the lenses. Hopefully future tweaks will fix it. For now I find the case pointless.

Frequented disconnects

Have to reset the case, uninstall the app and load it again to make it work for a couple of days at best. Also very annoying the Lightning connector doesn’t pass data trough. Unable to connect to my car USB to play music or even charge.

Too often not ready

I want to love it more, and as an app it's pretty spot on but the reason we are using the app is because of the cases. That's sadly where the issue lies. I spend more time getting told either that my phone doesnt support this device or just that the case isnt able to connect. Which leaves me sitting with a case that's doing nothing but warming up my phone. No shutter button, no battery pack charging, etc. If they could reliably get their hardware to work with the software I'd be glad to rate it higher. But as they go hand in hand where one suffers so does the other.

real point and shoot app, love you guys.

Does not connect with case

Kris5050

Just bought the case and the app doesn’t even want to connect with it. Can’t turn the case off nor can I use the shutter button

Pretty good but needs a few changes

LorNrocks

Thanks for fixing the battery case issue! The only thing I see now is the battery case controls are missing from the widget/the 3D touch shortcut menu. It's a huuuuge pain to have to open the app and then the case menu just to turn charging on or off. I would also like to see the file type setting (IE jpg, raw, etc) stay the same when I switch between lenses. Otherwise keep up the good work!

Pretty disappointing

Pdxheathrow

I just spent over $300 with moment. I would expect the app to be a lot better. Constantly crashing while trying to focus with shutter button (moment batter case), no support for slowmo, pano, timelapse, kinda lacking features. Hardware is pretty good. Software needs works.
