Opensignal Internet Speed Test

OpenSignal is the ultimate signal toolkit that shows you how to get a better network connection instantly, find nearby free Wifi hotspots worldwide, view signal maps so that you can compare performance of networks in your area and test the speed of your mobile or Wifi connection. Unlike other apps, which look for maximum possible speed through optimized testing, OpenSignal informs you about your true speed - what you are likely to experience when normally using your phone. Anyone using the app contributes data, informing others about real-world, not estimated, mobile performance (and we'll never ask you for personal information, just your signal strength stats).

With OpenSignal you can map cellular coverage, find Wi-Fi hotspots, test and improve your reception & get faster data.

- Signal compass points you in the direction your signal is coming from
- Speed test for download, upload and latency
- Map of cell towers and Wifi hotspots
- Coverage maps allow you see the best/worst places for 2G, 3G and 4G
- Free and ad-free

Based on our community-generated data we are able to help keep you better connected by giving you a practical solution to the problems of slow mobile internet. Simply follow our signal compass to walk towards better phone signal or see our in-app coverage maps to work out which carrier is best for where you are, useful if you're thinking about switching networks. Our wifi maps help you find local public-access wireless networks (Wifi hotspots).

Maps are not updated in real-time. Don’t worry though, we log the information you share with us to improve our coverage maps and performance information. We’re working hard to make sure the data you contribute to the project is available to everyone as quickly as possible.

Tips:
- Not all towers and wireless hotspots are in our database - we’re working on it!
- Moving in the direction of your cell tower (the signal compass) will not always improve reception due to interference effects/local geography
- Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

If you read to here (!) you should really join the OpenSignal beta to help us improve the app, just email [email protected] if you're interested.

Never points to a real cell site.
celltech127

I’m an RF Technician and worked in the cellular industry for 20 years. Have used a lot of various test equipment and Cell phones to verify cell signals, I know how to pinpoint a cell site. This app never pointed to an actual cell tower or cell repeater. It has zero value for locating the site you’re phone is working off of. If you used the actual signal from the actual tower the phone is locked onto, then it would be great. App will be deleted shortly if no change is made.

No cell tower found
Dazee

The main reason I downloaded the app. I have 3 or 4 bars depending where I stand - there is a tower reportedly within 4 miles

6/10/20 update
Motley Cross

Update: 11/04/20: used the app to install Wilson pro 70 and it gave me the direction of tower but only on my iPhone and not on my mother’s iPhone. Weird. Maybe my iPhone has different chipset and antenna in my phone than hers since I have the largest internal memory on my phone. I still wish I could pinpoint where the towers are located on the map like the app used to do. That feature was removed long long ago. Please please bring it back. Btw her signal is great now with the Wilson pro 70. From -124 to strong -85 signal. Yay! 6/10/20 Update: So yes it’s a little better because the signal compass is back. I’ll give a couple more star rating for that. You deserve that at least. Can you bring back the feature that shows exactly where the towers are located on the map? I like to see just how far the tower is going to be when traveling. I can give a perfect 5 stars if that comes back. Especially because I am going to be working on my mothers signal booster out in a rural area. Thank you for bringing back the signal compass. Outdated review: No more arrow pointing towards nearest tower. The feature is gone. Why? There is also no way to pinpoint any tower anymore.

Video test crashed
Sulu600

Tried to start video test on new iPhone 12 Pro Max on IOS 14.2 but that portion of the app pops up for a few milliseconds then closes. On T-Mobile 5G network.

Works well...

...but needs to report 5G separately, including all three bands.

Major bug: unable to find nearby cell towers
asaguroi

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled this app ten times, disabled and re-enabled location services with Precise Location enabled each time, even turned off WiFi, made sure cellular data access is allowed in app settings. I am using an iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14.2. The app can track my location in the coverage map section, but it can never find nearby towers, which makes this app on iOS practically unusable beyond a speed tester and coverage map viewer. I’ve installed the app on my friend’s Android phone and it can locate towers properly. Both are on AT&T cell networks, so I’m not sure why it can track my location and run speed tests, but can’t ping a tower to determine its location with respect to my location.

Mobile data hog
its-paul-yall

This app used 5 GB of data in the month i had it installed. I tested the speed maybe 10 times during that timeframe. So either each test is 500mb or the background data is out of control.

Mostly Worthless
gbois

I got this app to find the nearest cell towers in a rural location with a weak signal. It has never worked for that purpose. The app always says that I have "No Signal" and that I am in Airplane Mode. The app has permission to access my location, Airplane Mode is off, and I do have a signal. Speed test is the only function that works, but is no better than other apps.
