Best Running App... by FAR

dwyncott

I’ve been searching for an app like this for some time... particularly after some of the big players seemed to stagnate or not work. This app works perfectly with my iPhone and Apple Watch— is accurate and easy to use. I’m now able to reliably track my runs with one device and never lose a run. Literally the best money I’ve spent in the App Store. Don’t hesitate.

Not working well

Ladykitchen

Not sure what happened but no longer tracks me as i run. i can run for 50 min and it says i’ve gone .02 miles.

Amazing app...a bit hard to figure out at first

Vlblake Norman 56

This is a great running companion for interval runners. 100% worth the money. It’s hard to figure out at first and not very intuitive. I had to watch the YouTube video on their website to understand some of the features. Once I did, though, I was good to go!! Love it now!

Great running app that doesn’t up-sell

jd2020

A long-time great running app that respects users and doesn’t up-sell subscriptions. There have been some challenges with iOS 11/watchOS 4 but they seem worked out. Fast support from developer to my request—really appreciated since this app isn’t bankrolled by a giant sports company like others. (Must starting workout on Watch to get HR sensor). Not a fan of the 3D Touch interface on the Watch, but working well now on watchOS 4 (some sluggishness, but that seems par for Watch).

Awesome and getting even better!

Edit: I've now used this app for at least 6 years. It is my go-to app for events and love the Apple Watch integration. One key trick (for me) is to start and stop the event on the watch (for a long time I tried to start on the phone and ended up having two events go off when I switched to the watch). I happily recommend iSmoothRun to all my friends. I just finished the Hershey Half Marathon with iSmoothRun, and it was wonderful! For a little background, I have run halves and fills for 4 years, and have tried RunMeter (a nice second place to iSmoothRun), RunTracker, Kinetic, and MapMyRun+. iSmoothRun is clearly developed by runners who saw what was missing, added those features, and topped it off with some nice polish. For events in cities, sky scrapers totally mess up the GPS, so the combination of GPS with accelerometer is brilliant (the accelerometer kicks in when GPS is lost). Counting step rate allowed me to keep my rate much more consistent at mile 11-13. Auto-pause after 10 seconds works very well (I am very slow pressing stop on my arm after a half). I hope this app takes off for a very selfish reason: I can't wait to see what other features they pack into this thing. Right now, you need to turn on the metronome after you start the run, which is my only complaint. And yes, I have absolutely no affiliation with them (I do computer development for a small DC firm).

Great App. Outstanding service

Update (December 2017) This continues to be an excellent running app. I can program in my workouts, get audio cues and the developer was super responsive to questions. Just started using iSmoothRun and am really enjoying it. What I like about it: - Very easy to set up workouts, including intervals by distance or time - The Pebble app is awesome - I can see everything on my Pebble - Very responsive customer service - Logs all workouts (with everything you wanted to know, including some extras that you may not have thought of) - Integrates with numerous other programs; I use RunKeeper - so all my stuff is also on the web and I can review there. I am looking forward to my running improving as I am better able to plan and track my workouts.

Need haptics!

Beaker's Mama

Wanted to love it but if I can’t run without the phone, it’s useless to me. I want to get haptics on the watch when I change HR zones but alerts only work if you run with the phone. Still on the hunt for a decent running app to do HR training with that doesn’t require me to carry a phone

It's the best

Doesn't get better than this app for running.

Poor visibility

The AW app is difficult to read outside. The color of the font for data (blue) gets washed out in sunlight. I haven’t been able to get the HR functionality to work. I’ve given up on trying to use the AW app.

Horrid support, does not work with Biosport (though it says it does)

Ed the art guy

Purchased a SMS Audio Biosport headphone and ismoothrun was the only app stated to work with it. Could not get it to work (lack of clear instruction) and SMS audio did not respond to my email enquiry. Since there is not trial version of this app, you must buy it to see if it works. (it even says so on the website) As mentioned I could not get it to work, but there were other negatives: 1. Seems like it has no treadmill support 2. No iPad version (for treadmill use) The only thing the app would do is cause the volume to pulsate. Would like my money back. I did contact ismoothrun and 8 days later this was their reply verbatim: "Sorry for the late answer. The app should have permission to use the microphone and the above procedure should work."
