Get to Know the databases behind the app:
Get to Know: EWG’s Food Scores
How do we know what we’re eating, really? There are so many claims on food labels these days, and ingredients no one can pronounce.
We created EWG’s Food Scores because we all want to know what we’re putting in our bodies. Food Scores rates more than 80,000 foods, 5,000 ingredients and 1,500 brands.
Many other food apps rate food products on nutrition, but EWG went two steps further. Products are rated based on three elements: nutrition, ingredient concerns and degree of processing. We combine these three scores into a single overall product score. We weigh nutrition most heavily, ingredient concerns next and processing relatively lightly. We rate all foods on a 1 to 10 scale, with the best foods scoring a 1 and the worst foods scoring a 10.

Get to Know: EWG’s Skin Deep
Have you ever counted how many cosmetics or personal care products you use in a day? Chances are it's about 10. Through those 10 products you expose yourself to more than 126 ingredients a day. Most people use these products without a second thought, believing that the government must certainly be policing the safety of the mixtures in these myriad containers. But it doesn’t.
That’s why EWG created Skin Deep -- the world’s largest personal care products safety reference tool. It offers easy-to-navigate safety ratings for nearly 80,000 products.

*** Attention developer! *** When trying to add a new item to the database the app crashes after taking the first photo. I’m using an iPad Air 2 with iPad OS 13.3.1. Thanks.
Product ratings at you fingertips is a consumers dream. I've waited years for this app to work. Today I search for tea, get green beans, tried green tea, get frozen vegetables. A frustrating waste of time.
Options for looking up products have been lacking from three years ago when I last looked at it. I need clearer guides on which companies to buy from, track records, and a search bar that filters chemical usage, putting most of their efforts to advanced searches. Wonderful concept though!
Not sure why anyone would trust this app
I really want to love this app. They are doing amazing work and this could help so many people make informed decisions. The app however is useless. I’ve scanned multiple items with no results. I’ve browsed brand names, with no results. I go to their webpage, those items are there, after much searching. The whole point though is to be able to quickly find an item. Still needs LOTS of work.
EWG used to be an app I trusted, but lately main-stream known to be harmful products with 80% D and C rated products are rating as overall As. On the flip side cleaner products with all A/B rated ingredients are overall Bs. The math doesn’t add up and it’s sad to see a company being bought out by big corporations to make them look better. App is still helpful to look up individual ingredients but sadly I don’t trust their overall ratings anymore.
This would be so helpful if they made the changes ppl r mentioning in the comments. Updating inventory and would be nice if they had a barcode that can scan products and tell us the toxicity level.
The product recipes are old and outdated. I love the app but it’s hard to know if the products are up to date at all because many of the product “recipes” are several years old.
