Downward fall into horrible service – Zipcar: cars on-demand Review

I used Zipcar for about 3 years - started in 2017 and used mostly out of the Providence/Boston area. At first it had dependable and high quality vehicles that were regularly repaired and looked after. The issue then was how expensive their plans were at the time. As time progressed, I personally experienced more and more issues, including but not limited to: • Disabled vehicles that I only discovered were inoperable when I arrived at it after having booked it (the app cannot tell you whether or not a vehicle is disabled - so you’re literally gambling on booking a car that may or may not function) • Vehicles that have no fuel AND no gas card. The Zipcars use a gas card that is included in every booking and is stored in the vehicle. Well if another renter accidentally walks away with that gas card - guess what? You no longer can fill the vehicle with fuel and this is an extremely annoying, repeated issue. • Vehicles with severe mechanical issues that compromise safety - worn out engines, cars with no oil, flat or bald tires, etc. it’s become ever more common. • Vehicles that can’t be opened using your Zipcar card or the app which can absolutely destroy your plans if you are on a time constraint. • The most horrendous customer service of all time. Around the mid-2019 Zipcar clearly outsourced their customer service to a call center in Mexico and that goes about as one can expect - agents with no idea how to do their job, extreme language barriers, and absolutely no chance of speaking to a supervisor. I personally had my sensitive and confidential information - notably my debit card - breached and actually charged by one of their “managers”. After that I stopped using Zipcar. All in all - I would give my overall Zipcar experience over 3 years of using it a 2/10. It’s just THAT bad. They don’t care about you as a customer and are happy to just throw driving credit at you than ever correcting their inherently flawed system. It’s a shame because it started out well - only to be ruined with no ability to be professional or reliable. Your best bet is to rent a car the good ol fashioned way. Sorry ??‍♂️
