A Hidden Gem

Neill Cohen

I came upon this in my quest to find a wiki app- linking related notes, I've discovered, is the way my brain organizes information: I want to disentagle, but preserve integrations. This minimalist app does this elegantly, and creatively- my notes appear in Markdown. I'm a nondeveloper, but can tell you that its engine, a script called Lua, is powerful, yet simple, once you get the hang of it. The developer, Matthew, has been clear and responsive, so in a short time, appearance, form, and automation are coming together. It uses plain text and Dropbox sync so it is "future proof." The integration with my Mac, via LAN, ensures privacy, but can use a big of interface tweaking, but this is an esthetic quibble. It won't be before long until I can use this as an Evernote alternative! edit- Despite persistence on the part of the developer, automatic Dropbox sync does not work- manually syncing works, but feels crude.

Still Very Happy.

Update 5-16-2017 I left my original review below, but I've been using Trunk Notes for months now, and I thought I'd add a few more thoughts. The 5 stars stand. This app is very useful. It has become an integral part of my mental process because it allows me to do things like very easily make a deck of 500+ flash cards (Something that would be arduous to physically hold), or keep track of daily goals, or write poetry based on randomly selected keywords. I also still really like the ability to randomly select images from my art collection. I use this app every single day, and am still very happy with it. Original Review: Unlike some of the other 5 star reviews, I haven’t been using trunk notes for years. I’ve only been using it for about a week and a half, but I’m already in love. My mind is a very complex network of associations, and no other app I’ve ever used has allowed me to document my thoughts in a way that made sense to me. Trunk notes changes that. I can journal my thoughts, and hyperlink them to other thoughts, then can add tags to keep similar thoughts grouped together where I can find them later. But what really makes this app stand out is the ability to create dynamic content. After loading 1,500 or so of my favorite pieces of art, it was very simple to make a 3x1 table that would pull 3 images at random. Every time I reload the page, I get 3 new images from my collection. 5 minutes more of writing simple html, and I had a 9x9 table that did the same thing. I am very happy. I did this all with the built in random function, and didn’t have to write hardly any code except to call the function. I also am especially fond of the web sharing feature. The web interface basically has the same functionality as the app interface. It’s almost like getting a desktop version for free. I can type a hundred times faster on a real keyboard, so I like being able to write my notes from a web browser, but view them later from my device. The drop box functionality also works very well. My entire wiki is now on all my devices which is nice because the 9x9 grid looks way better on a larger screen. Overall, my first impression is very impressed.

In my top three of must have apps

There are a handful of apps that I can't live without and this is one of them. In fact, this is the lone app that keeps me on iOS. I keep everything in trunk notes. I tried Evernote, but I hate having my data in the cloud. I love that my data is local, yet synchs between my devices with Dropbox. I wish apple would make this app one of the app of the week apps so everyone could find out how awesome it is.

Sync doesn't work

MigMit

I created a page on iPad and later attempted to edit it on iPhone. It just keeps reverting. Dropbox sync is set to automatic.

Best app ever.

Wiki editing, Dropbox sync, active developer adding awesome features! Lua scripting, html export, markdown. I have been using this app for a long time and no other app is as solid.

Formatting rows over KB blank after 12/2/17 update

FrankCa

The formatting rows above the keyboard are blank after the 12/2/17 update, although touching the various spots on the blank area causes the functions to work.

Pretty Good but...

I like the app. It’s useful. The markdown works well and it makes sense for me to use a wiki. My biggest challenge is that the only place I can use it is on my iPhone or my iPad. I am all over when it comes to platforms. The dropbox integration is nice and necessary when going between my Apple mobile devices. However, I have had to decide if I really wanted to invest my time and effort putting things in an app that I can only use on Apple mobile devices and for me the answer was no. I also use a lot of Windows, a little android, some Linux, etc. and not having full wiki readability on at least on Windows is a deal breaker for me. I opted to set up my own personal wiki in the cloud, it’s available to me everywhere I’m connected, I can easily extend it, and it’s been working great. Even transformational. If all you need is access on a mobile device you take with you all the time - this will work great. For me I needed more platform support so I’m giving it 3 stars. No android support, no cloud support, no windows support, not even mac support...but 3 stars because it does work for what it does on Apple mobile devices and at least you can sync your iPads and iPhones via Dropbox.

Nothing better.

This is what I've been looking for since iphone 1. Powerful, simple, flexible, I'm using it as a personal wiki for music related content as I learn more about music. It's wiki-like structure makes me feel like im contributing to my own personally crafted and ebess "music Wikipedia" which I can refer to anywhere, can access anywhere, and capture anything. It's like Evernote but without selling your soul and content to a company who's primary goal is to lock your content on an island, packed with your content, yet impossible to escape. This is the first new app I've added to my home screen in 2 years. For those home screen obsessed power users - that's a big deal. It's that good.

Too clunky for writing and forced to learn Markdown

I was hoping this would be a simple notebook for creative writing. Unlike a school or business notebook where projects are typically linear, creative writing is all over the place. It’s tough to keep track hard of all the snippets of conversation and plot twists that jump into your head in the middle of the night or while cooking spaghetti. I wanted a place to jot ideas and quickly find/ move/organize later. I thought I’d be able to set up search words, for example and the app would group them together. So, by touching a word in my list of pre defined words, I see all Pages containing that word. A page containing both #magic and #dialogue would of course be in both groups. This is not that. Trunk notes requires a markdown and brackets and a whole lot of other formatting but I guess it’s useful if you’re trying to create your website but I spend more time formatting in writing. There must be an app with the features I described above but that description is too long for a search engine and I don’t know the buzz word for it. (Hashtag search)?

Thank you

Thank you for this app! It’s very helpful to my study routine and ideas mapping. I would say not only helpful but fundamental. Please keep up with the updates and good work. I would love to see “face ID” feature Tks
