The new version is not good

ELS518

It’s awful. What was wrong with previous version? Please fix this.

No one can leave well enough alone.

Two computer terms, update and virus, neither are good for you. Every time Gatehouse updates this app they make it worse, and we all know VIRUSES in any form are not good for you. Did you people ever hear the expression “ if it ain’t broke don’t fix it “. Geez what a pain you people are.

Links don’t work, other major bugs

Earlrond

There are major problems with the latest version on my iPad*: links don’t work at all; rendering is buggy, with photos and other graphical elements frequently bleeding into text areas, resulting in unreadable text; swiping/resizing pages is dodgy; constant error message at the top regarding an invalid security certificate. (At least I think that’s what it is saying, as the lower part if the text line is cut off. Even the error messages are rendered with errors!) This update was clearly issued without adequate testing and should not have been released at all, especially during a global crisis. I hope the app is fixed soon. Until then, I will have to read the ProJo on my ancient iPad 2, which is still running the previous version and works fine. The downward spiral continues. Not worth it

I have had this app since the start, years ago. I didn’t realize how expensive it is compared to direct Online edition from the Journal until I had problems with the new version of the online Journal on Wed. I can’t get refunds, I can’t call anyone for info (Journal doesn’t even know I am a subscriber since my account is through app) and Apple isn’t responsible for Apps. I can’t share my paid subscription with my family. And new version won’t let me download paper offline to be emailed to them using iPad as it did before. Waste of money.

From mediocre to bad

Seanach

The previous app had a poorly designed interface but was at least reasonably fast and consistent. This version has an even worse interface, very poor rendering of page elements, and is painfully slow.

Surprisingly Well Designed

RI_BCUBED

Works flawlessly on my iPad2. Impressed by the various options for viewing/jumping around. Very surprised to find the Parade and the cartoons from the Sunday Paper. Very thorough presentation, and so far, zero crashes/hang ups. Super app!

A Great Start...

This is one of the best conceptual newspaper apps I have seen. It is a little buggy right now but nothing that can't be ironed out. I really like the fact that it attempts to mimic the manner in which we traditionally read "regular" newspapers. A couple of recommendations: 1) advertising inserts... I.e. the Sunday ads... I enjoy going through the ad inserts like Best Buy and CVS and would imagine it couldn't hurt your ad revenues by adding these in with the iPad version. If people do not want to read them they can simply skip over them. Personally, I actually would not even consider switching to the sole use of this iPad app without the ads being included. (2) highlighting capability... This app already has the ability to "dogear" pages of interest, but having the ability to highlight lines of interest for ease of referring back at a later time could be quite useful. Right now as a free app this is a no brainier that every RI'er should consider using. Well done!

Providence Journal IPad app

I enjoy this app and find it easy to navigate. What I miss when viewing from the web site is browsing and this let's me do just that. I wonder how to send the articles as email attachments without going to another site. But other than that well done!

I am revising my rating

African Drum Chick

The first day the new Projo app came out, I gave it a 2 star rating and called it a fail. Since then I have been using the new app daily and have discovered a couple of tips that elevate it's usability considerably. Pros: I like that you can see the actual paper layout. I really miss that with some other online newspaper additions. You turn the pages by swiping the screen and it gives you, literally, the big picture. I also like that the sections are available with a tab. When you want to zoom in on a story, you can tap it once to zoom to it, or tap twice to open it in a separate, full page, window. Cons: For me, the biggest shame is that it doesn't fully take advantage of the screen size of the ipad. The image of the whole page is very small and you have to zoom in to read anything. When you zoom with a single tap, the edges of the article are blurry and you have to wait for it to come into focus. (I am using an ipad. Maybe on the ipad2 it is a little faster.) Also, learning to navigate with the tapping and double tapping wasn't intuitive at all. I had to read an instruction page to figure it out. All in all, once I learned how to navigate it, the online version of the ProJo has turned out to be a regular part of my morning.

Amazing free app

Newsaddict81

I love the ability to read all the stories that interest me. Most news apps on.y offer top stories. It felt a little clumsy at first moving around the page waiting for it to focus so I could read. Then I realized that double tapping The article brings it to a reader for easier reading. I will use this app daily!!
