Modular is a powerful sound design tool which allows you to build your own custom synthesizer by connecting different sound modules together. By separating each synthesis process, modules can be connected in any way. You are no longer limited to fixed synthesizer design, you are now in full control of your sound. This is the beauty and power of modular synthesis. Whether you are a professional musician or a beginner who just loves sound, modular offers you an incredibly powerful synthesizer experience.

Modular looks, acts, and sounds like a hardware modular synthesizer to give you features that musicians want such as pulse width modulation, oscillator sync, 4 pole ladder filters, and 1v/oct filter tracking. Traditional modular systems are expensive and out of reach for the average artist. Modular is here to bridge that gap and allow everyone the opportunity to use these powerful synthesizers.

Modular provides modules in every category for free. Enough to build a vast array of sounds. Buy only the modules you need or get the bundle which includes all modules including future modules. Owning a module means you use as many as can fit in the modular rack. You want to build a monster 6 oscillator synth? You can.

What makes modular special is the audio and visual experience you have with it. Beautifully minimal menu systems and interface along with ultra realistic synthesizer graphics are just the beginning. The real beauty is not what you see, but what you hear. Pristine and punchy oscillators that sound great, even at the extreme ends of the frequency spectrum. It starts with band limited oscillators. Not just traditional methods of band limiting, but band limiting that enables each note you play to have the maximum number of harmonics without distorting.

Every detail of the audio has been analyzed to provide you the most amazing sound possible such as buttery smooth filter sweeps and resonance so stable you can use the filter as an oscillator!

Modular goes a step further with connectivity and supports Audiobus, Soundcloud, CoreMIDI, as well as Sonoma Audio Copy so that your music making workflow is streamlined and integrated.

Needs an update!

Love the app, would really like to see a small 4 or 5 step sequencer module.

I love this but...

Is this dead? It is a great app, can be a little buggy otherwise I find it fun to use and can sometimes make really crazy sounds!

Awesome Potential

...though there seems to be an issue with screen navigation. I haven’t had much luck; it keeps popping into a position obscuring the keys...

Glad to see that this project is not dead! ?

Started using this three or four years ago, and found it to be a great introduction to playing with modular synthesizers, without the high cost needed to bootstrap into the world of physical modular synthesizers. The deal for getting all of the modules and all future modules was a no-brainer, and I enjoyed playing with the variety of things that they had included, but was sad to see that things went quiet for several years. I’m just browsing through again today, and noticed that they released a new module about nine months ago, so I’m going to pop this open again and play with it some more. Definitely recommended, and I hope they continue to build on the great work that they have already done!

Best synth app available!

UPDATED*** Just like the title says.. This really is the best synthesizer app currently on the App Store IMO. Not really for beginners but, could be pretty useful in learning modular subtractive synthesis concepts. It's very similar to Arturia's Moog Modular V and the sound is nearly as good. As others have mentioned, there is room for improvement. Connecting cables can be a pain and is a bit buggy. Different color patch cables would also be helpful. I like the idea of being able to stack patch cables but the mixer module usually solves that problem just fine till you run out of cabinet space. Being able to add/remove cabinet sections as needed would be nice. One other thing I'd really like to see in this app is a polyphony switch. Being that it's a virtual analog/software synth type thing, polyphonic capability shouldn't be out of the question. Plus, the delay module definitely needs the ability to sync to tempo just like the LFO can. I tried messing with the MIDI input of Modular using the output of the "Little MIDI Machine" app from Synthetic Bits and was somewhat disappointed. It did work... but, It seems there is considerable latency. Hopefully that will get sorted out. Aside from that stuff, I just wanna see more modules. Especially a sequencer module. This app definitely needs a native sequencer for sequencing simple note and/or CV patterns. Being able to select different "skins" for the modules either individually or as a whole would be a nice touch. UPDATE*** I don't know if it was intended to work this way or not, but... Out of curiosity to see if it would in fact work, I connected the output of the iPhone to a real hardware filter module and believe it or not, it actually works! Now, I know what some of you are thinking. "Of course it works dummy.. It's an ordinary audio signal!" No, that's not what I mean. Read on... First, I whipped up a very simple patch in Modular using a single oscillator, 1 VCA and an ADSR envelope. I then used the splitter module to split the voltage control output of the envelope into two separate outputs. I connected one of them to the voltage control of the software VCA and, the other one was connected to the on screen left main audio out. The VCA audio out was connected to the right side on screen main audio out. Now, using a cable that splits the 1/8" stereo out of the iPhone into 2 individual 1/4" cables, I connected the right side (the audio output from the VCA) to the audio input of a Tellun TLN-428 VCF module and, the left side that carried the envelope's voltage control output was connected to one of the frequency modulation (CV) inputs on the Tellun filter. After a couple of knob adjustments on the controls of the software modules and my hardware VCF, I crossed my fingers and struck a key on the screen. To my surprise, it worked...The CV of the envelope was actually controlling the hardware filter! I also did the same with one of the LFOs in Modular and had the same results. It didn't seem to work perfectly and I had to do some tweaking it but, I did work. There possibly wasn't quite enough amplitude on the control signal to fully open the filter but I think I might be able to mess with it more for better results. Again, I don't know if the developer intended the app to be used in such a way but, it pretty much blows my mind that you can actually use it in the same way you would use real hardware modules. All that for less than $10 once you've unlocked all of the modules in the bundle. You would be lucky to be able buy a single quality patch cable for that price! All in all... This app is incredible and, in my opinion worth 10X what you pay to get all of the modules unlocked. If you're into synths and, especially modular synths but don't have the $$$ it takes to put a proper modular together... What are you waiting for? GET THIS APP!

Impossible to Use on iPhone

Title says it all. Some sort of weird auto zoom and pan takes over such that the screen is mostly blank and all of the interesting bits are off the screen. Either nobody tested this or the forgot to reveal the mystical incantations that control the app. Complete waste of money on IPhone 5s.

Sweet

This mod synth would be excellent on iPad, but it's just "good" on iPhone/iPod, not because of the app, but the size of the "i mobiles" it's hard to set wires without zooming in, but not a big deal, sounds great and feels like your an musical engineer haha, I'm no expert AT ALL, but I bet after you familiarize yourself with this POWERFULL app, you would be very comfortable with a real modular system, and for the guy that foolishly gave a 1 star rateing because he said the MIDI is not working properly, my guess is the app outsmarted him, I've never tried it yet, but everything worked perfectly so far as described in the extensive manual that came built in, I love this thing, try it out!

Waste of Time & Attention

You will never recoup the time and attention you give this abandonware fail cr-app.

As good as it gets

I've been producing electronic music digitally for years and using this app I feel like i'm just starting to truely understand the art of sound synthesis. With a tight budget its been virtually impossible to feel real control over the sculpting of original sounds with a synthesizer until now. I believe if you're looking for a synth to actually learn how to build your own patches without a couple grand or programming knowledge...this app is for you.

Fantastic
Joseph78265

The only other app I could compare this too was a korg synth app and this is way better being able to select certain components
