Spotted what turned out to be a Harlan’s hawk which is a variety of a Red Tail. This app correctly it’d this variant

So much easier to carry than a bird book! Thank you to Cornell University for this amazing app! Please take a moment to donate to Cornell’s Bird Program...

I’ve been away from birding for 7 years. I moved and was able to find a home with a nice backyard. My new feeder system has been installed for 10 days. Today was my first visitor and the Merlin Bird ID found it for me in two clicks. Love this app.

I absolutely love this app and use it every time I'm out birding. It consistently provides correct identifications based on my input too. One major flaw is that you can't save your bird sightings though, and this would be a really great feature to have, maybe even with a map of where you saw each species since that data is collected too. In any case, love the app and it has proven invaluable in the field!

I’m no ornithologist, or even an enthusiast, but I must say I really love this app! It’s very simple to use, and it’s impressive how often it comes up with the bird I’m trying to identify, just by asking a few easy questions. Even when I get some of the questions wrong, the app still figures out what I mean! I would recommend this app for anyone who has even a passing curiosity for birds. And the best part? It’s free!

I use this his app on a regular basis. It provides great information on the bird species located in my area.

The picture recognition works surprisingly well. Very few photos I’ve given it have come back negative or with false IDs.
