It’s a great app!

HappyHealthyMom

This app is a great solution to a growing obesity epidemic in our youth. I love that it encourages kids to eat MORE “green light” foods (fruits and veggies), be MINDFUL of PORTION SIZES of “yellow light” foods (protein, dairy, grains), and REDUCE but still INCLUDE “red light” foods (sugary drinks and treats). It encourages them to play for activity and has fun games to learn about health and wellness. Such a fun way to learn about eating better and moving more.

Not okay

RecoveringFromWW

I spent 18 years on and off Weight Watchers. In that time I learned that food—and my body—were enemies I had to constantly fight. I hated myself and my body because I always gained the weight back. My eating became incredibly disordered and eventually a friend approached me to say they thought I had an eating disorder. They were right. I have two young girls and I can’t imagine wanting them to go through this. Health is great—this app isn’t about health, it’s about losing weight. Making food the enemy (and punishing yourself for eating) is a disaster waiting to happen. WW doesn’t care about you or your children. Their intent is to create customers for life. Please don’t start your kids down that road.

Eating disorder in the making

I spent many years suffering from eating disorders-good foods, bad foods. Don’t do that to your kids. Read Ellyn Sattar’s book about division of responsibility. It was in graduate school learning about counseling eating disorders that I got educated about how I wanted to raise my 4 kids regarding nutrition and eating. They all are adults now and intuitive eaters and have always been healthy weights and active. Don’t ruin your kids for a lifetime by using an app like this!

A Step In The Right Direction

Everyone seems angry about this app, and it’s making me enraged. America has a weight problem, and here is a well-known, and trusted establishment creating an app to help promote HEALTH. People are saying that it’s wrong to advertise to children, but HELLO! Has everyone forgotten about HAPPY MEALS, that if you buy your child a cheap, unhealthy meal, they’ll get a toy!! McDonald’s is EVERYWHERE, and they target both adults and children. And that’s not all, any fast food place does it. This app is a way to combat the increasing obesity dilemma, and people are outraged about it. It’s insane that people are responding in such a way, so don’t take this app down, PLEASE. America needs this. Loosing weight does NOT immediately make you anorexic, trust me, I am a recovered one. I know what it’s like, and eating right to be healthy is completely different from not eating at all to be thin. People are also saying that this app will cause eating disorders, but eating disorders about becoming thin aren’t the only eating disorders out there. There’s also binge eating disorders and much much more. If this app gets shut down for trying to make people healthy in this obesity epidemic, than there truly is no hope for America or any other place in the world.

Look up eating disorder statistics

Rihanna T

Before downloading this and putting your child on a diet and therefore causing a mindset of “good” food versus “bad” food, research the statistics for eating disorders. This WILL increase your child’s risks of developing an eating disorder and life long battle with food!

Poor way to teach children’s healthy eating habits

This is a sad way for adults to teach children healthy eating habits. Model eating a balanced diet in portion sizes that fill you up. Expose your kids to new foods. Trying something out of your comfort zone - you might like it! Stop labeling food as red or green and learn to enjoy and savor the food you are presented with.

NOT RECOMMENDED

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and many health care professionals from pediatricians, registered dietitians, nutritionists, and eating disorder specialist have all spoken about why this app could lead to disordered eating behavior. Children should not have to be preoccupied with thinking about the way their body looks, obsessing over food, and feeling “good” or “bad” because they ate something the app told them not to. The app doesn’t have your best interest in mind. It is not accounting for food availability, income, or medical dietary needs/restrictions. Do not let it dictate what is “good or bad”. If you decide to use this app, you (the adult) use it as a tool for guidance on what you can add rather than take away. Acknowledge the “reds” and that they are okay. Consider ways you can add “green” without moralizing a food or restricting it. There is a fine line between kid-friendly nutrition education and promoting disordered eating behaviors, I believe this app crosses it.

Concerns

It’s really troubling to associate certain foods with stoplights. This app is not based on solid science; for more information on how to help children develop a truly healthy relationship with food, check out Christy Harrison or other HAES providers work!

Do not download this app ?

Lisafighting171717171717171818

This app is unethical. Decades of research shows that dieting predicts weight GAIN and EATING DISORDERS. CHILDREN are born eating intuitively and should NOT be taught track everything they eat. Their bodies are growing and changing and even the American Pediatric Association now recognizes discussing weight and diets with children is actually HARMFUL and advises against it. Weight Watchers is attempting to make millions by roping the next generation of people to buy into the MYTHS of diet culture. Do not use this app. Instead educate yourself on RESEARCH and teach your family to find joyful ways of moving their body and learn to listen to and feed their bodies in ways that feels good. Teach them to love and accept the natural shape of their bodies and that what matters most IS NOT their weight. I think the worst part of this app is that it tells children they can “make your parents happy” by eating less. This is like handing an adolescent an instruction guide on how to develop a life long eating disorder and it is deplorable and unethical.

Be cautious!

Just Susan Hensey

Dangerous - as an eating disorder survivor, this may likely cause restrictive behaviors and lead to bulimia or anorexia. Adults be cautious and don’t put this app in the hands of children!
