Amazingly useful app/website for ANYONE that is interested in nature

I have been a Docent (trained volunteer) at a California State Reserve and a California Naturalist for four years. iNaturalist is by far my #1 go-to place for any questions on species identification issues. It’s astonishing that (a) the automatically suggested IDs almost always contain the correct answer, usually as the first suggestion, and (b) that you can get confirmations of a proposed ID from multiple species experts around the world, and often within minutes of posting an observation. My favorite so far is a picture I posted of a single feather my granddaughter found (and held in her hand in the photo) that was quickly identified by an 18-year old expert on the opposite side of the world (and she also told me specifically that it was a “secondary flight feather” from a Red-shouldered Hawk). I can’t live without this app and neither should you.

Outstanding app.

I’ve taken so many wildflower photos in the woods over the years and always meant to try to identify them. At last I have an easy fascinating method for doing so! I would happily pay for this app but I cannot because it’s free!

Epic

Didn’t know how much I needed this app to identify all the nature photos I take. Makes nature walks and trips soooo much more rewarding/informative

Amazing tool for identification and community

The strength of iNaturalist is the community that it creates.A crowd sources identifications and often gets it right, Even from my less than stellar photos. Even more fun however, is when an expert in the field weighs in on one of your identifications. It can even become a conversation. This app can change the way you interact with the natural world.

iOS 14 broke iNaturalist :-(

McFlustered

I just updated my iPad to iOS 14.0.1 and now it won’t upload an existing photo from my camera roll. It lets me select the photo (yes, I gave it permission to access my photos) but when I touch the green “Next” button it goes back to the “take photo” window. I sure hope you push out a fix for this, because I rely on it a lot in my Facebook nature group.

I absolutely love how easy this app is in identifying different living species

Not for simple identifications

Too involved.

A bit of fun

So far I am enjoying this app. It helps me ID plants and insects mostly and faster than thumbing through my field guides. But, it’s only so accurate, sometimes the suggestions are off, but the other users are helpful. I do wish the phone version made it easier to use, like being able to sort your photos by order, class or whatnot for easier searching and I wish you could choose to display the binomial instead of the common (useless) name.

So much fun!

Have loved using iNaturalist to identify everything from stary sea skates to leopard slugs, bumble bees to wildflowers. Easy to use, tons of information, just too much fun!
