Great!

Rukkio

This app has so much more than I expected. It's perfect for cataloguing my family as well as keeping track of fictional characters.

"Not just a simple GEDCOM viewer", indeed!

Coolout

It's not a GEDCOM viewer at all! I have not found anywhere to import a .ged. I can find where to export one, and the app will create one, but it will not import pre-existing .geds. Sigh... all I want is a simple .ged viewer. Don't get me wrong, this looks like a great app to start and maintain a .ged with, it's just not what I'm looking for and since it alluded to not being "just" a ged viewer (implying that it is a .ged viewer; it also says one can import .geds but this isn't found in the app nor in the Help section - it also says it's the first .ged-viewing app, which is bs) I had to say something. Hopefully they'll retract the fallacies and figure out a way to import - there are other apps out there which have been out for YEARS that do this.

Nice Implementation

The Shavian One

I've used a Gedcom viewer to see my genealogy files on my iPod while doing research, and its helpful, but this is so much better, because it seamlessly integrates with Heredis on the Mac desktop. The sync can be run either direction, from the mobile device to the desktop, or the other direction, and supposedly, it can be initiated from either device. In my case, I did from the desktop. Syncing is simple and found under the tools menu on mobile devices, but only works if both devices are connected to the same wireless network. I think the other reviewer must not have done that. The documentation is on the Heredis website; I would say the description here in the iTunes store is somewhat thin on the details, which is too bad, because this is, IMHO the best genealogy program AND the best integration with a mobile device that exists for the Mac (and probably for any platform). The geolocation feature is indeed very cool. On my iPod, it pulls up a map of any location in the file, which was a GEDCOM that I imported into Heredis on the desktop. Strangely, the geolocation feature is not implemented in exactly the same way on the desktop: an address that the mobile device mapped instantly was not mapped on the desktop version, which requires a precise location. The developers have obviously taken good advantage of the iOS mapping capabilities delivered by Apple. On the desktop, the number of geographic locations that will immediately transfer to a map will depend on the quality of the GEDCOM file that you use. You can also add media directly to any record with your phone, iPod, or iPad by taking a picture or using an existing one in your library. And the charts you can generate are varied and interesting. That's something Heredis has always been known for. This is the current gold standard for the Mac. Is it perfect? No, I would love to see better delivery of text such as biographical notes, perhaps on a separate screen, to improve the layout of text the way Reader does in Safari. I recommend this program.

Great Software

wbjethro

Oh so much better than Reunion. Wish I could use the desktop version at home but, although it supports Leopard, it appears to be Intel only. I play with the demo at work (Snow Leopard). Nice it lets you open your entire file even in demo mode. I can play around with my data and explore the app as well. Yes you can import .GED files. Just open a .GED file you received as an email attachment or might have stored on a Dropbox-like service. Haven't tried adding the GEDCOM directly to Heredis' file sharing folder in iTunes but I bet it works there, too. If you're looking for importing as a branch into an existing family file, I don't think this FREE app will do it but I'm sure the PAID desktop app will. (Would be nice to be sure, but hey it's free and convenient on iOS.) Heredis' developers are not writing hobby software. They write software FOR PROFIT (OMG!). Buy their desktop software to support continued development of excellent FREE, full featured UTILITIES such as this one. One last thing. I never even heard of Heredis before discovering this app. Wish I had. Absolutely love it.

File too large?

Pawpawkenny

Looks like a great app except it won't load my tree(my wife's loaded fine). Says gedcom is too large. I went to website but could not find anything about gedcom file size limit.

Not for the serious researcher

Endless Delight

Cannot handle large .ged files :(

Very, Very Good

This is a nice iPhone genealogy app, maybe the best I've tried. It has at least 55 events you can add to your genealogical tree, such as occupation, education, health, nicknames, marriage banns, etc. Add media like photos and videos, etc. To the folks who say it cannot load large files I'll say this: I deleted several apps on my iDevice to give myself more room and, voila, the program loaded my gedcom without a hitch.

fails to load large gedcom file

frugrat

40 mb gedcom failed to load. hence most real files would fail. very large app 21mb vs 1 for reunion and roots magic. latter had no problem with this file (in roots format).

Doesn't make a chart

Point?

Nonresponsive!

Sphotoman

BSD Concepts has not cancelled their automatic email ads after numerous attempts using their request system and offers no other way to contact the developer. Ridiculous!
