Misleading, at best

Concerned_App_User

Say you have 45,001 download speed samples for a hexagon: -- 45,000 test samples say download speed is "slow" (0 – 1.5 Mbps) -- 1 test sample says download speed is "faster" (25 Mbps +) They'll use that single "faster" sample to color the hexagon. They don't color based on the average speed of the 45,001 samples. They color it based on the best sample that's ever been found there — even if it's 1 out of 45,001. That's not accuracy. Even worse, the larger hexagons at zoomed out views are not aggregates of the smaller hexagons they encompass. They're taking the best color (dark blue for "faster", for example) and bubbling that up. One large hexagon can cover an entire small city. If that city had a single speed test of 25+ Mbps anywhere within the thousands of hexagons contained within the large hexagon, they'll color it as "faster" (dark blue) — characterizing an entire city as having great download speed — never mind that every other sample in the city, which may be 100,000 or more, could be "slow." Wait, what? I don't see how this app can be taken for anything other than fraudulent.

RootMetrics is Great!

This app by RootMetrics is great.

Just the worst possible experience

If I could give this negative stars I would. Update: I am adding one more complaint Why are continuous testing limited to 21 tests? When I am driving around (especially on my motorcycle) I used to just set tests to run and let it go. Now I can't, just 21 tests then you have to restart it. Terrible idea, makes it useless for testing while I am driving in areas that otherwise have no tests... ---- "Improved user interface" is very subjective. The new user interface is pretty but has seriously fatal flaws: 1. Everything is small now, all the controls are tiny. Makes it impossible to use in a car or on a bike or whatever. 2. The new color scheme is very pastel, light colors. Hard to see in sunlight. We'll have to see if they fixed the bug that tests run never get uploaded - they have been broken for that for several versions. It does not require Verizon - it works on any carrier. They just made switching your carrier way more confusing and obtuse. Seriously, this new UI is a step backward for usability. Its pretty though. Root Metrics just keeps making this one worse. At least Open Signal, and Speedtest and other network testing apps are still OK, I just use them instead. Also - a five star review that reads "root metrics is awesome" can't be trusted.

Needs Apple Watch support

TheGadgetinator

I really like this app and it does what it says it does. Below is a list of improvements I think it could use. Needs Apple Watch support All the test data should be shared with cellular providers to help them improve the accuracy of their maps and to alert them to problem areas that users have found and tested. Should also show physical locations of cell towers and which tower the user is currently connected to. Show topography and highlight geographic barriers between the user and each cell tower based on the known GPS elevation/location of each cell tower and the GPS elevation/location/compass heading of the user. Store map data offline on users device so the app can still be useful when no signal is available. User signal test mode needs to be able to continue to automatically test signal strength as the user moves a specified distance/time away from the last test location and to continue to run in the background even if there is no signal. Needs option to overlay each carriers projected coverage areas for each network type.

Good

Deep Democracy

Great idea. I wonder how current the self reported data is. Would be nice to filter for date range.

Great help

Mike Dias

This app is excellent on helping someone decide what cell company will work best for them in their area.

Nice!

Seems some ppl have a gripe with this app & others not, I'm one of the ones who finds the info collected in my area & others accurate, therefore I do like the app!

Mixed Bag

Rainstorm

The most recent release does not accurately record call quality. Particularly for networks like Sprint which uses an eCSFB handover to bridge it's LTE (data) bands and its calling network (CDMA 1x). The app inaccurately records the LTE signal strength (which has a far less reach in terms of coverage regardless of band class and carrier) and labels it as call quality on the hexes. The nice thing about the old version was that you were able to map just the call quality (by shutting off LTE on your device, this also applies to VZW, T-Mo, and AT&T). It also had minimal impact on the data plan. Sprints call quality map is inaccurate on root metrics because of this issue. It reaches greater distances, and penetrates walls a lot better (CDMA 800) than this app reports. Please bring back the call quality measurement function. Update: the new version that has "bug fixes and updates for iOS 9" no longer reports properly. You can't see the results of your tests on the map anymore. Rootmetrics what is going on? Update: See above. It seems as if every other update is functional. Get it together!

The old app was better

chrisisaguy

Faster. Less clunky. This one isn't good to use.

Helped me choosing the best carrier!

عبدول الخليفو

I don't know about the old app, but this one helped me determine which carrier has the best coverage/speed depending on the areas. Very useful!
