Advanced means computer rolls more doubles

Ken Miller, PhD

I’d like to think that the advanced level of the computer simply means more advanced strategy. It may mean that, but it also means substantially more doubles for the computer. That’s annoying and not the point of advanced play. Deleting this from my iPad.

Computer Cheats

On expert, dice rolls are anything but random.

It’s good but....

I’ve had this app for perhaps 10 years. I’ve played thousands and thousands of games. Probably 25,000 on this app? CAVEAT: I believe that anyone who loses will blame bad luck. I’m likely no different. The developer rarely updates the app. There are some clear glitches like the ‘random’ dice will give the puter a 5 when coming off the bar probably a third of the time. If my home board has just one open spot, the puter will regularly get in within 2 or 3 rolls. Overall, not so random favoring the puter. NOTE: I play at the hard level and win 53% of the time. If I play at expert, I win about 30%. With that said, it’s still a verrry good game.

Nice program but many crashes and bugs. Great when it works. Doesn’t work a lot. Many crashes.

Too many doubles

I’ve played this app for years. Mostly fun, but in the Hard and Expert settings, the computer can simply roll you off the board and never let you back on. I’ll have to try the manual rolls.

Great game - one suggestion for the devs

NiceladyMT

Excellent! The only suggestion I have for the devs is this— you have two options of how to move your checkers, but can only choose one or the other, never both options of play simultaneously. You can either do a single tap which always move the highest number first, or you can hold down on the checker and slide your finger to move it. The sliding method shows you a highlight of where the checker can move, but makes you move it by sliding, never clicking. This can be so clunky in gameplay. The tap method does not show highlighted move options because it’s automatic. On the tap option, I found some things happening such as— I rolled a 3 and a 4 when I was ready to bear off but still had only one checker left in the outfield, and it MADE me move the outer checker four, without the option to move it three, which I wanted instead. I wanted to move the outsider in with the 3, then bear off my 4 spot. Wouldn’t let me do it because it always no matter what makes you move the higher number first. Every other (crappy terrible) app like lord of the board, you can do either method if you choose. For example, on most apps, if I hold my finger down on the checker, it shows highlights of where I can move. Then I can let go and simply double tap to move which one I want to move the farthest first, OR I can just slide the checker manually so I can move the lower number first. Make sense? The sliding the checkers function is really clunky and hard to use. The click function is better, but then takes away your option to slide/ move a lower die number first when you need to. Devs please reply and tell me if I’m wrong and there’s a way to do both! If so I will update the review. I’ve tried looking but can only find one thing in settings to toggle on or off, and it allows you to only do one of these move methods at a time. Other than that, great game! Also, hints would be great if you made an error, and when it pops up, it could tell you the gravity of the error (mistake or blunder for example), and then show you statistically the top 5 best moves in order, like eXtreme Backgammon app does. But overall- awesome!

Too easy for people to disconnect

Game points are a sham.

Great app.

Great way to increase your knowledge of backgammon, become a better player and choose appropriate opponents.

Question dice

Abalani

If the dice are “fair” in computer play, I have a question. The odds of getting out of the bar with three open slots is 75% (that’s just pure math/probability). Then why do I not get off the bar with three open slots around 70% of the time when I play the app in expert mode? Notably it is considerably easier to get off the bar in easy mode. Maybe I’m just the unluckiest player ever ?
