In-App Expansion Purchases Not Allowed?

Vanguard06

We’ve been playing Carcassonne for over a decade and love the app as much as the board game. Each time I to buy the German cathedral and Abbott expansions, I get a message saying in-app purchases are not allowed. I’ve checked my settings but cannot find any reason. Please help.

Serviceable, if a bit dusty

S. Gresham

A recent convert to iOS devices, this is one of the few games (if not the only game) I used to play on Android which is entirely different between the two platforms. I understand Asmodee couldn’t release an iOS version of their adaptation due to licensing arrangements ... but now that I’ve spent some time with this version, I really wish something could have been worked out. This app feels old. The version 1 Carcassonne artwork, the mellow music (which, for some reason, fades away entirely after a few minutes), the rudimentary sound effects — all of these could benefit from a facelift in future updates. Coming from a game with lots of atmospheric effects & gorgeous 3D graphics, this version feels like a step (or a few steps) backwards. I especially hate the spaces left between tiles as they’re played. It’s a waste of screen real estate once the board begins to expand, and not at all true to how the physical game would be played. The AI is shockingly brutal! A few games against what are meant to be the least challenging opponents, and I’ve yet to win a single one. I don’t need to win to have fun, but it’s surprising to see a simple/easy opponent like the Maid have such a strong grasp on stealing cities/blocking their completion. I can only imagine playing against the harder opponents would make for a very dismal experience. Despite my qualms, I did find plenty to like in this version. The solitaire option is a very clever & satisfyingly challenging experience. I can easily see myself settling in for an hour or so to unwind just in a few solitaire games. I also appreciate the option to disable fields, as I’ve always found them a very unnecessarily finicky scoring option in the physical game (though Asmodee’s version handles fields even better with a toggle to view, at a glance, which players control which fields). The artwork for the AI opponents is also very attractively done — much better than the broad caricatures of the old Android version, and than the lifeless emblems in Asmodee’s new version (Frank and his 8-bit tiles are a hilarious Easter egg, and I’m glad I took the time to explore the entire app & unearth him). At the end of the day, I’m glad to have a digital version of one of my favorite tabletop games. For solitaire challenges, impromptu pass-and-play game sessions at a cafe/the office/a party, and to save a bit of space when traveling, this is $10 well spent. I just wish the app had a bit more polish to bring it aesthetically into line with the many digital board games which have followed it.

Exceptional

FyreFestivus

Yet I can see why people think this game is rigged or people are cheating. I’m not completely convinced it isn’t because the odds and luck I’ve seen in this app I’ve never seen in my years of playing tabletop. Also, if you’re crying about having your piece blocked, get better and learn how to not get blocked.

Love it! Online needs to eliminate the “X”

Mbjohnston3

This adaption of the board game is simply stunning. Love playing the computer characters. My gripe, and it brought my review from 5 to 3, is when playing a one-on-one over the Internet versus a real person, the preview that shows you if your move will block the opponent has created awful gameplay. When I play the same people live, this doesn’t happen and the game flows. With this feature, more time is spent seeing how to trap meeples on the board leaving the game play empty. When I react equivalently, you end up with 30 pieces to play without either person laying a meeple. Not fun. MAKE THIS AN OPTION FOR THE GAME ... and I’ll change this from 3 stars to 5 stars.

Audio problem

Hello. The audio only works when I have a Bluetooth device connected. It will not play through the speakers at all. Please fix. I’ve tested on two devices. This iPad and an iPhone 8

Showing the ‘blocks’ is absurd

CherrySigler

Even as a newbie player I recognize that automatically showing players where they can lay to block you is ridiculous. In real life you have to figure that out on your own. There should be a way to turn this off in the settings. I have also never been able to get more than one other player in a match. Playing only two player gets old. Fix this and it would be 5 stars.

Worth every penny

Daddy beeef

One of the best game available on the App Store. Very addictive even after many plays. The expansions keep things fresh too.

Great implementation, want more expansions!

A Gold 88

This implementation of my favorite board game for iOS is smooth and intuitive, almost flawless! Love the feel of it and they have captured the ‘flavor’ of Carcassonne perfectly. My one gripe: I want more expansions! Abbey, mayor, under the big top, hills & sheep, etc... lots of wacky expansions that can allow for further diverse gameplay.

Can't download

Friendlie

Just purchased for iPad mini 4. Can't download. Update: I had to hit "retry" multiple times (20x) and "walk" it through the download process until complete which worked. Even a power cycle had failed. At least it works now. It needs an undo button for accidental presses.

iPad with iOS 10.3.3 won't download

As title states, would love to try this game. The description says it's compatible with all iOS device above 8.0. If it's not compatible with my device, then state it, so I can't download it. Big waste of money now.
