Trek but not classic – Trek Quest Review

This game has a bit of a learning curve. The control panel is limited, forcing you to go down into submenus to access functions and to go back up to the main menu and into other submenus to access other functions. Meanwhile, you are constantly interrupted by status messages which take up your screen and require you to acknowledge to clear so you can get back to firing those damned phasers. This is important because this version of Trek is REAL TIME. So you are constantly trying to move your ship and fire your weapons with all of these status messages popping up and interrupting your actions instead of scrolling on the edge of the screen somewhere. Oh by the way the swarmers don't stay in their sectors like in old Trek they move across sectors into yours so they keep popping up until you run out of power and die or until you warp to a starbase. The good thing is that the long range scanner shows you everything to help this, but in classic Trek part of the fun was to fly through the quadrant doing long range scans which only showed neighboring sectors to find enemy ships and starbases. This trek reveals the whole quadrant so that you can run to a starbase quickly otherwise the swarmers will swarm and kill you. And, btw, you can't stay at the starbase because you have this impossible mission requirement of keeping them from destroying the starbases and planets. I was looking for classic Trek without the text interface. What I got was a video game with classic Trek interface and commands. This is not fun. if you want to make a real time game you need to make the controls simpler and more intuitive and get rid of those pop up status messages that require acknowledgement to clear.
