Very Good, but Very Frustrating – Magic Duels Review

This game is excellent. The interface is great, the AI is great (for an AI), the story mode is great and altogether I’m very impressed. There are a lot of issues though that have evidently put people off and I share in their frustrations. Power consumption is huge. There are a couple of bugs or glitches or whatever. By far the biggest problem though is that it is virtually impossible to build a decent collection of cards. I’d be happy to spend real money on more cards but it’s just not worth it. 15 boosters got me a jumble of incompatible nonsense, two mythic rare cards and no planeswalkers. $10US gets you 8 boosters (48 cards - only 6 cards per booster pack). It’s just not worth it. To make in-game money you’re looking at 5 wins against human opposition, which might take you 12 or more games when you’re starting out and playing against people with better decks. For 6 mis-matched cards of dubious usefulness. So, great game. Really great. But could be so much better with just a couple of tiny changes. Play the story game, play a couple of duels against other people but don’t expect to be able to make any progress while maintaining your sanity, or have the freedom to build the decks you want to.
