A Masterclass in Idle Gaming – Idle Mage Attack Review

As someone who has been playing idle games for years, including but not limited to Cookie Clicker, Candy Box, a Dark Room, AdVenture Capitalist, Realm Grinder and Clicker Heroes, I feel safe to say this is one of the best designed of them all. Idle Mage Attack feels like the perfect combination of idling and active play. You can let it idle while the game is closed, taking a penalty to power and gold gains. You can let it idle while the game is open (consuming very minimal power to boot). You can also play semi-actively, tapping on it every now and then to collect a tune or two. But you can also play actively, swapping out spells to combo certain enemy types, collecting runes and min-maxing your progression. I never feel like I’m missing out on something for not playing actively, but I also feel fairly engaged when I do. Even this engagement doesn’t take much out of you though, as there isn’t really any ‘losing’ in Idle Mage, so you don’t have to fret about not doing something. The gameplay is quite deep. So far I’ve encountered a total of four types of resets that increase your Mage’s strength to take in bigger goes over time, all of which require longer periods of time to achieve than the one prior. This is a LONG game. I’ve been playing it for a couple of years now, and I am probably just as actively engaged in at as I have ever been. It is so chill yet rewarding that it can retain your interest for a long time without burning you out. I don’t want to spoil all the surprises though. But this game is free, the small banner advertisements are all the ones you will see and are turned off with any purchase, and it doesn’t shove anything in your face EVER! There are no “Hey, special deal! This 19.99 package for only 9.99!” pop-up add, and no ad-watching for gameplay bonuses either. You have no reason to not just download it and try it out, which was exactly why I originally downloaded it, and it is my most played mobile game hands down. This game is the definition of a hidden gem. This should be on the front of the App Store, known by far more than do know it. Easy 10/10.
