Farewall; It Was Nice Knowing You – Gameception Review

I figured now's a good a time as any to write a review for this app, seeing as it won't be around for much longer. (In case anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about when I say that, Apple is dropping support for 32-bit apps with the upcoming release of IOS 11 this fall, and Gameception will be among those to disappear.) Anyways, this port of Doom, while admittedly flawed in several ways, is still, overall, great at what it was intended to do: play classic Doom, in addition to custom boom-compatible level packs. In the case of the former, Plutonia and TNT notably have garbled sky textures, but nonetheless, playing them, along with The Ultimate Doom and Doom 2, is still a joy. Although certain custom maps may not work, particularly large or extremely detailed ones, the app is still able to handle a vast majority of what's out there. In terms of the control scheme, I find that the one utilizing the turning wheel works brilliantly for me. This method is perhaps second only to the one found in D-Touch on Android, but that's a story for another time. With these controls, as well as a bit of practice, I'm able to more than adequately maneuver myself and perform all of the necessary functions to play the game at a reasonable skill level. One sour point, however, that has to be mentioned is the appearance of the user-interface icons, both in menus and in-game. There's just no getting around it—they don't look very good, rather amateurish even. I'm not really sure what went wrong here. I assume the developer used those images only as placeholders and intended to replace them at some point, but obviously, since the app was clearly abandoned, that goal never materialized. Back to the positive side of things, one feature I highly approve of is the integration of DropBox for simple transferring of WAD files into the program. iTunes File Sharing is also supported, but I honestly had no real interest in mucking around with that and having to physically connect my phone to a computer to make it happen, so I know virtually nothing about how it works. I guess I was also fortunate in that the app's DropBox API continued to function for me until the very end despite it warning me, at some point, that it was deprecated. Although I doubt anyone will actually read this, if you're interested in seeing this program at all, I'd suggest you act fast. It'll be a shame when this is gone for good and there'll no longer be any means of playing Doom on IOS (id's DOOM Classic isn't safe either, mind you). All I can hope is that GZDoom, as it was demonstrated in a YouTube video, will be available on IOS, but honestly, I feel like that's wishing for a miracle at this point.
