After four years, won't open, crashes – My Daily Journal Review

I have been using this app daily since 2012 on an iPad 3. After a few years, the app became slower to open. Then I would have to attempt open it at least twice before the main page would appear. A week ago I tried to open it ten times, and each time it crashed. Luckily I had backed the journal up daily to Dropbox so I downloaded the app to a spare iPad 3 and restored it. It now opens immediately on the old iPad. I wrote to support, and was told that the size of the database was preventing it from opening on the original. I can't accept this explanation, since it opens immediately on the old iPad and the database is the same size. They also told me the loading problem would be fixed with the next upgrade sometime this year. I'm not happy with having to use two iPads just to write in the journal.
