Needs work – Volumes Turn Up Your Audiobook Review

This is basically a good idea, but the app has nagging problems and a lot of catching up to do if it’s going to compete with Audible’s excellent one. First, every time you pause playback long enough for the phone to darken it’s screen, the whole app shuts down and you have to reopen it to continue listening. There is no sleep timer, which is a very, very basic tool for any sort of audio app. People listen to mobile apps like these in bed, guys. There doesn’t seem to be a proper chapters feature, so if you want to move forward or back in the playback, your only option is to use the 30-second arrows. There is no indicator of how much time remains in the recording, so if you set off for a 40 minute drive you have no idea if you’re going to run out of audiobook along the way. A more sophisticated, but still nice, tool provided by the Audible app is the ability to bookmark passages to listen to again, say if there’s a sentence you want to remember or type out. Volumes is a pleasant way to access audiobooks directly, but it has a long way to go in terms of basic usability.
