This app covers the following topics applicable to mechanics of materials, mechanics of deformable bodies, solid mechanics, mechanics and materials, and statics:

-Calculate the normal stress on and extensional strain in a body
-Solve for the effects of temperature changes on a member
-Search for material properties of alloys, plastics, and woods
-Determine the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and shear modulus of an object
-Use Hooke's Law for uniaxial stress and plane stress and a generalized version to solve for a member's stress or strain
-Evaluate axial deformation problems
-Find the shear stress on circular bars, rectangular or elliptical shafts, and thin-walled members undergoing torsional forces
-Determine the twist angles of torsion members
-Calculate the extensional strain and flexural stress in pure bending beams
-Solve for the deflection of statically determinate beams

The Wolfram Mechanics of Materials Course Assistant is powered by the Wolfram|Alpha computational knowledge engine and is created by Wolfram Research, makers of Mathematica—the world's leading software system for mathematical research and education.

The Wolfram Mechanics of Materials Course Assistant draws on the computational power of Wolfram|Alpha's supercomputers over a 3G, 4G, or Wi-Fi connection.

Reviews

Not much detail
Tassy26

There are definitely better options just by looking up beam solvers online. This doesn’t give much detail behind equations or anything either. Also, app likes to crash (1 specific one is when search in thermal expansion section, app crashes ~3 seconds after showing result of search)

It doesn't open on my iPad. Waiting for a fix in an upgrade.

Rather disappointing...
Koolaid2014

Considering the quality of the main Wolfram Alpha and of several other Course Assistant apps I have tried, I had expected much more from this app, but have been disappointed. In trying it out I thought to look at the properties of inconel and aermet steel, only to find that the app recognized neither of these materials, even though the basic Wolfram Alpha did!! My advice, save you money and get the regular Wolfram Alpha, at least until the update the app considerably...

Not a good choice

I would definitely suggest that Wolfram focus more energy on fixing and improving the quality of their existing apps instead of releasing so many mediocre apps. This app just has the bare minimums as far as what it can do. If you are in a mechanics course you DO NOT need this. All it does is: allows you to enter in data which will then return an answer. It just uses the simple formulas you already know. Also, there is not an option to calculate with a kip only N, kN, Kgf, Gf. Come on Wolfram get with it...

Doesn't work as advertised
